Cross Cultures by Cheryl Tiu presents‘A Taste of Kenya in Manila’ by Rachaleve Kamau
MANILA, Philippines - This Saturday, Dec. 5, Nairobi-born cook Rachaleve Kamau will be cooking an array of Kenyan dishes at Arrozeria at Century City Mall in Makati from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The one-day-only brunch is organized by Cross Cultures, an events platform founded by STAR columnist Cheryl Tiu that promotes the exchange of cultures through food.
Kenya has had a longstanding relationship with foreign settlers and was once colonized by the British. Because of this, the taste, cooking methods and presentation of Kenyan cuisine have been greatly influenced by Europeans, Indians, Arabs, and Pakistanis.
For P1,995+ service charge (which already includes wines from AWC Philippines), guests can look forward to kuku njugu (Rachaleve’s signature chicken in peanut sauce), niama soup (Kenyan beef stew), kachumbari (mixed vegetables), mukimo (mashed peas and potatoes), ugali (cornmeal staple), nazi-viazi kitamu (coconut and sweet potato pudding), and several more.
This is Cross Cultures’ third and last event for 2015. In September, they brought Ethiopian cuisine to the Philippines by way of Eat Ethio, and in October, Asia’s No. 1 restaurant Gaggan, for a three-day event.
“Some people have asked me, ‘You’re doing Africa again? You just did Ethiopia,’” shares Tiu. “We intentionally spotlighted another country in Africa as part of our education process to address misconceptions. Africa is not one country, rather a continent with 54 countries, each with a very different cuisine.”
Kamau was born in in Nairobi to a Kenyan dad and half-Tanzanian, half-Congolese mother. She learned how to cook from her mother and grandmothers, and started cooking at the young age of eight, making her own signature chicken in peanut sauce. She has showcased some of her dishes in bazaars and catering services, under her Rachaleve’s Kenyan Cuisine, and the responses have been very positive. This will be her first pop-up event.
