Chateau Angelus: Jewel of Saint Emilion
November 30, 2002 | 12:00am
Just half a mile from the famous Saint Emilion bell tower, on the renowned "pied de cote" and fully south facing, Chateau Angelus is the outcome of an impassioned commitment made over four generations ago by the Bouard de Laforest family. The property owes its name to a plot of land among the vines where the angelus bell can be heard ringing from all three local churches simultaneously: the Chapel of Mazerat, the Church of Saint Martin of Mazerat and the Church of Saint Emilion.
At the beginning of the century, this plot of seven acres was acquired by Maurice de Bouard de Laforest, who already owned a neighboring vineyard which had been in the family since 1850 Chateau Mazerat. The vineyard was then enlarged little by little by his son Jacques and Christian who bought several adjacent parcels until, by the 1970s, the magnificent property which is now managed by Hubert de Boaurd de Laforest and his cousin Jean-Bernard Grenie was established.
Raised to the status of a "Premier Grand Cru Classe" the Chateau is recognized throughout the world as one of the jewels of Saint Emilion.
Chateau Angelus is the outward and visible sign of the commitment of a family to glorify the very essence of their land. Here, among the vines just as in the cellars, the respect for traditional practices is combined with constant technical progress, so that each harvest, each vintage, is brought to the very summit of perfection.
The tradition for perfection continues under the aegis of Bacchus International, the purveyors of many of the finest wines that we can find in the Philippines.
Under the astute guidance Alex Lichaytoo, Bacchus fame as the Chateau Angelus grew along the years much to the great delight of wine collectors and connoisseurs.
Alex and brother Clifford Lichaytoo hosted one of the finest epicurean feasts in honor of Hubert de Bouard de Laforest, the proprietor of Chateau Angelus, whose presence highlighted the rarity, the importance and the success of the dinner.
When we read the wines that complemented the menu, then and only did we come to realize why no less than the proprietor attended.
