Why we need protein, micronutrients in our diet

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  Based on the results of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute’s 7th National Nutrition Survey, the most prevalent issues in nutrition in the Philippines today are Vitamin A deficiency for children aged six months to 12 years and iron deficiency for infants as well as pregnant and lactating mothers. There has also been a significant increase in the number of children and adolescents who are underweight and underheight. In addition, three out of 10 pregnant women deliver infants with low birth weight. On top of this, an average 70 percent of the population lacks the recommended daily intake of essential nutrients and protein.

These deficiencies lead to problems such as growth retardation, poor cognition, and increased health risks. If this situation continues, the country’s most important resource — its citizens — are put at risk.

San Miguel Pure Foods Company Inc. (SMPFC), the leading food company in the Philippines, has partnered with government to launch “Push for Protein”, a campaign aimed at raising awareness on the importance of protein and micronutrients in our daily diets. To be staged in key provinces throughout the country, it hopes to help people better understand the value of proper nutrition.

In order to function well, we need to complete our daily nutritional requirements. An adult requires four to five servings of protein every day, while children need two to three servings. A serving is about the size of a matchbox or a palm-sized slice.

Since poultry and meats are two of the best sources of proteins, Magnolia Chicken and Monterey Meats have taken further their “Care” and “Trust” campaigns to ensure that its products contain the necessary protein and micronutrients needed by consumers.

Magnolia Chicken and Monterey Meats products are brought to consumers from farm to plate, bringing with them SMPFC’s strict food safety standards and quality criteria.

The company also has ongoing campaigns such as “Alagang Magnolia” and “Mon Tiwala”, which bring into action SMPFC’s purpose of “Nourishing and Nurturing Families Worldwide” and its core value of Malasakit.
