Fall into a food coma at theMaginhawa Food Festival

MANILA, Philippines - Maginhawa Street in Teachers Village, Quezon City, has already established itself as any self-respecting foodie’s destination. Along Maginhawa, and the little streets that snake through this main road, small, independent, and family-owned restaurants operate as Quezon City’s best-kept secret. There’s something for everyone: milk tea, breakfast food, vegetarian, Japanese, desserts, burgers, and Italian. Now, imagine if all these restaurants joined forces for a food festival. Wait, it is happening! In time for the city’s 75th anniversary, Maginhawa is partnering with the Quezon City local government to promote the street as a tourist destination for food lovers. All participating restaurants will have booths along the street, as well as music, games, prizes, and cooking demonstrations. To top it off, San Miguel will hold its Oktoberfest with free samples! Traffic will be closed off so people can hop around the street. Gird your loins, people (and your stomachs).

Read books and make lightsabers at Star Wars Reads Day

Star Wars Reads Day is dedicated to promoting book reading in context of the epic franchise. Aside from storytelling sessions, there will be activities where you can make your own Droid and lightsaber, a Yoda and Sith drawing contest, demos of Star Wars games like the card game and the X-Wing Miniature game, and an exhibit. There will also be clone troopers, stormtroopers, snowtroopers, biker scouts, and Sith Lords. The event seems to be targeted for kids, but we’re guessing that there will be more adults than children. But hey, you’re never too old to be read a story, right? Star Wars Reads Day will be held today at the Glorietta 5 Atrium. The exhibit will be held at Kapow! Universe on the second floor.

Watch a ‘pelicula’ with a ‘c’ at the Spanish Film Festival

This year, the annual Spanish Film Festival features 20 contemporary Spanish and Latin American films, a mixed bag of romance, comedies, documentaries, dramas, and suspense. Of the films, we recommend Las Brujas de Zugarramurdi (Witching and Bitching), about two robbers who hide in a forest taken over by flesh-eating women; La gran familia española (Family United), which examines a family wedding in time to the finals match between Spain and Netherlands at the 2010 World Cup; Todas las mujeres (All Women), which follows a man as he meets all the women in his life to resolve his issues with them; and 10,000 noches en ninguna parte (10,000 Nights Nowhere), which goes on a trip with a man who is leading three lives simultaneously in Madrid, Paris, and Berlin. Pelicula will be held at the Greenbelt 3 Cinema from October 10 to 19.

Say ‘anyong haseyo’ at the 2014 Korean Film Festival

We suggest you catch the 2014 Korean Film Festival even if you’re not a fan of K-pop. This year’s fest is presented by SM Cinemas, and will feature seven Korean films. The films that stood out to us were Company Man, about an assassin working in a contract killing organization (that acts like a regular business) who questions his job when he falls in love; Hwayi, about a young boy raised by five criminals and who is about to enter the family business; and My Paparotti, a dramatic tale of a teen gangster wanting to enter music and a music prodigy turned teacher who help each other reach their dreams. The films traveled around Clark, Davao, and Cebu before reaching SM Megamall, so make sure to watch it before it leaves the country for good. Just imagine: dozens of Lee Min Ho look-alikes (sort of) and good storylines. That’s enough for us. The 2014 Korean Film Festival will be held until tomorrow.
