Pump it up!

With fashion’s cyclical tendencies repeating every two decades, it should come as no surprise that the ’80s, with its heady garish trends and over-the-top looks, has made a comeback. Filtering back in over the past couple of years with the return of primary colors, minidresses and now, thanks to Lanvin’s latest collection, billowy sleeves reminiscent of the shoulder pad craze, we can finally say that the ’80s is alive and thriving. Just ask the kids at Fluxxe with their neon eyeshadow and the ladies who lunch once again toting their vintage Chanel purses.
YStyle wanted to revisit the ’80s with its extravagant glamour (workout videos of chicks with hair teased up to the ceiling, anyone?) and tap into the looks that made Flashdance star Jennifer Beals (she of the She’s a Maniac video refrain) and leotard-sporting Olivia Newton John household names.
For summer, we recommend indulging in ’80s-inspired silhouettes. A little bit crazy, sure, but definitely fun. Check out model Jackie Mitchell in Eric delos Santos-designed swimwear. Halter styles with elastic waists, embellished with a circular disk, are straight out of an ’80s video.
And if that’s not enough, some teased hair, colorful legwarmers and bright eyeshadow should do the trick.
