Humanitarian Tribe

- From Young Star Magazine -
In biology, there is something called "Altruistic Behavior" – wherein literally, one organism risks his own reproductive success to better the chances of reproductive survival for another. It can be as simple as a mother dog protecting her pups, and as complex as several dolphins attacking a shark simultaneously to protect their territory and the weak. Humans being technically animals, we are not immune to this kind of behavior. And like animals, many partake in it with their loved ones, while others choose to practice it for the good of the whole homo sapien sapien community. The society calls them humanitarians. Marvel Comics calls them Superheroes. And there is no doubt that these six women represent those in our community that are no less than super!

Name: Judith "Wonderfriend" Enriquez

Age: 30

League: He Cares Foundation

The He Cares Foundation administers to street children with several programs such as Balik-Aral, Balik-Kalusugan, and Balik-Loob sa Diyos. Judith was invited by the founder of the He Cares Foundation to join and help them out. She recruits members and helps with the active charity work in order to, in her own words "simply reach out and share Jesus with them." Inspired by the Lord to give something back to the community, she works hard in order to envision her goal for the youth of the Philippines. That they will "get involved in helping out those who are neglected, those who need care and bring them to God." She is most definitely a wonderful friend to all!

Name: Rosa Lee "Bantay-Bata" Ramel

Age: 25

League: Bantay-Bata 163

The Bantay-Bata 163 was founded by the ABS-CBN broadcasting company that rescues children who live in less than ideal conditions. Working with the rescue unit, she conducts social visits to reported cases to assess them, and if needed conduct rescue missions. Even since college she was already preoccupied with the issues of the child. AT that time the government did not explain in great detail the rights of a child until the government took action and created the "Rights of a Child." This motivated her to "help the vulnerable individuals of society." She works towards "A world where our children and youth will no longer suffer from sub-human conditions and where they can exercise their rights and develop fully as individuals so they further contribute to our society."

Name: Belinda "Captain Gravel" Pacheco

Age: 26

League: Habitat for Humanity

As a child her parents enlightened her to be socially aware. "I used to have my birthdays in orphanages and things like that." In UP, she further developed her fondness for activism by participating in student council. "That was where I really opened my eyes!" Working as a volunteer program coordinator of NCR for Habitat for Humanity – a foundation that builds homes and schools for the under priviledged – she tries to gain more volunteers for Habitat and organizes them when needed. You just might meet her on your campus while she tries to rustle up more members! Perhaps you can help her realize her vision of a "more socially aware youth."

Name: Claribelle "Bird Queen" Bautista

Age: 23

League: Haribon

Belle works as the membership retention officer for Haribon – a biodiversity conservation and awareness foundation. She recruits people to become members and try to encourage them to heighten community awareness of biodiversity issues. She initially took the job because of the advocacy aspect of it. It was her first job and she needed the experience. Then later on her focus shifted to the conservation and environmentalist aspect of it and truly believing in what she was working for. Adamant that the youth can truly make a difference with the environment she would like them "to be more considerate to the environment. Their lifestyle sould sustain the environment because its conservation begins with the individual."

Name: Mavic "Captain Planet" Hilario

Age: 24

League: Haribon

In the other aspect of Haribon, Mavic works as a technical officer. She is a biologist that surveys sites, seeing what kinds of forest species they are, and inventories the flora and fauna there. Soon she will be based in Dinagat Island, Surigao conducting awareness raising activities and monitoring the biodiversity in the area. She originally wanted to be a doctor, then in college she discovered that she enjoyed being in the field. "I hope the youth gets involved with environmental issues, it’s not just pollution that is our problem. There is much more beyond that such as forest degradation mainly due to economic problems. I hope we could all be more aware of the big problems!"

Name: Philomel "The Profiler" Buena

Age: 21

League: IBON Foundation

No, it is not an off shoot of Haribon but in fact quite far from it. The IBON foundation conducts research in education and offers publications for schools and grass roots providing information on socio-economic issues. Philomel has been with the IBON foundation for one year already working in the research department and writing in the flagship publication, FACTS and FIGURES. After graduation it was the only kind of job that interested her because she just couldn’t handle a regular office job. "I get to go out and do things of a great social relevance." She wishes that "even at a young school age, the youth are not blind to the realities of society but those realities be delivered to them to be constructive for their education and institutional values."
