The Dawning Of A Not-So New Age
October 27, 2001 | 12:00am
In this age, hedonism has become a virtue. The lines that separate black from white have become blurry through a revolution of free thinkers who chose to look beyond what was set as truth by higher-ups. They’ve made a whole new set of laws to fit a particular lifestyle.
Welcome to a time where they youth rules. This is our new age.
The new-age movement actually traces its roots way back to the day when the concept of Christianity was up and coming, and organized religion became the sole way to reach the "Highest Power." Displeased were all the people who felt they had true personal connections with the world of the spirit since their mystical experiences did not conform to what the churches dictated. Thus began the underground continuance of their practices.
Although it was difficult for the "shamans" or medicine men, who led the pack of spiritual outlaws, to outwardly recruit new blood (the concept of heresy was just as horrific as murder), they were secure in the fact that true kindred spirits naturally gravitated towards magic. Magic, for them, was seemingly too powerful to be overcome by structured religion.
Enough of the technical stuff. Let’s just equate the youth to being outlaws of the present, always searching for alternative ways to make the world work for them. And this is definitely not a bad thing. The greatest rebels (with a cause), more often than not, turn out to be the most awesome heroes…paving the way to bigger and better things.
Instead of being passive sponges, waiting for the next dose of truths to seep in without a fight, today’s youngsters are more proactive with their inquisitions. If parental knowledge does not meet certain standards, leave it to the youth to go out and find sufficient answers for themselves. Apart from the outstanding fountains of informationâ€â€cable television and the Internetâ€â€so easily ingested (and with pleasure, too) because of ingenious packaging…more admirable is the now universal virtue that the youth possesses: That unquenchable thirst to understand life the way it’s meant to be.
And where would be the reasonable place to search when the outside world doesn’t seem to cut it?
That’s right. The youth of today choose to look deep within themselves to discover that everything is going to be all right. Thus the shift in lifestyle to a more holistic view of wellness, from the inside out. Once the spirit is nurtured, the peace is translated to all aspects of being…body and mind to be exact.
Sounding very new age, right? That’s what youth is all about.
