Smells like Hong Kong
There’s good food that satisfies your hunger on a physical level. Then there’s really good food that satisfies you emotionally — food that takes you wherever you need to be. This is comfort food. One of my comfort foods is fried chicken. A new addition to the Salcedo Saturday Market is Peking Fried Chicken. I discovered it a few months ago and have more or less made a trip every week, either to the market or their Bonifacio Stop Over branch. Confession: I like to walk up to the window of the Taguig branch and take a deep breath before I place my order. The store smells just like a Hong Kong side street lined with noodle shops. The smell alone satisfies. It takes me back to a small back street in Causeway Bay where I have many good memories of noodles topped with duck, served by the shirtless and toothless owner. But I digress. Peking Fried Chicken is just like your favorite Peking duck, but without the expense of a plane ticket or the traffic to Binondo. I always have the quarter chicken with a side of noodles and soup. It’s a meal that’s satisfying for the grand price of P105. This fried chicken makes me happy. By itself, the chicken is deliciously salty but the extra hoisin sauce transforms it into the perfect bite.
