MANILA, Philippines — Sustainability in our lifestyle should be more than a trend. After all, what's good for the earth is also good for us.

Since April is Earth Month, it's good to be reminded that we can inject sustainability in our everyday lives, be it your house items, beauty products and fashion picks.

Here are some essentials that you can use to incorporate earth-friendly decisions to kickstart your zero-waste lifestyle:

Beauty kit proceeds to go to mangrove forest

In 2021, Garnier also partnered with non-profit organization CORA or Communities Organized for Resource Allocation to donate one mangrove seedling for every All-Star Kit sold on Lazada. As a result, 6,593 mangrove seedlings have been donated and planted.

Garnier encourages Filipinos to take that #OneGreenStep towards sustainability. They are the first beauty brand in the Philippines to roll out the green parcel initiative in its ecommerce stores on Shopee and Lazada. Since the launch of Green Parcel last June 2021, each delivery from Garnier is packed in a ToHS-certified paper box and protected with kraft paper tape instead of plastic tape, and recycled paper wrap from FSC-certified suppliers – no plastics or bubble wraps. Because of this initiative, 12,152 kg of plastics have been saved as of March 2022.

In 2021, Garnier also partnered with non-profit organization CORA or Communities Organized for Resource Allocation to donate one mangrove seedling for every All-Star Kit sold on Lazada. As a result, 6,593 mangrove seedlings have been donated and planted.

In celebration of Earth Day today, Garnier is partnering with CORA once again as 100% of profits from the All-Star Kits (Lazada) and the Super Glow Starter Kits (Shopee) sold on April 22 will be donated to the WoMangrove Warriors mangrove-planting efforts (exclusive for April 22, 2022 only). These mangrove seedlings will be planted to enhance biodiversity and help fight climate change in the islands and coastal communities of our country.

Global movement toward a more sustainable future

A.S. Watson's first greener store
Photo release

As A.S. Watson (ASW) just celebrated its 180th anniversary, the Group is launching a Greener Stores Global Framework to accelerate the transformation of retail towards lower-environmental impact stores to achieve a reduction in carbon emissions, water usage and landfill waste as well as leverage its scale for good to speed up the global movement toward a more sustainable future. The ASW Greener Stores Global Framework aims to forge and inspire its businesses to build a stronger sustainability culture and practice in the way it designs, constructs, operates and maintains its stores.

As the world’s largest international health and beauty retailer, A.S. Watson operates an extensive network of over 16,400 stores under 12 retail brands in 29 markets. It is one of the fastest growing retailers opening an average of 3 new stores every day, 365 days a year. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic in the last two years, A.S. Watson continued to open over 2 stores a day. That’s why making its stores greener is pivotal in accelerating its sustainability progress.

According to Malina Ngai, Group Chief Operating Officer of A.S. Watson Group, and CEO of A.S. Watson (Asia and Europe), “A.S. Watson Greener Stores Global Framework shows our deep commitment to accelerate our sustainability progress and move towards a more sustainable future. It is our vision to make every one of our stores a greener store with lower environmental impact throughout its lifecycle.

“Keys to our Greener Stores Global Framework are efforts to inspire a sustainable culture in the everyday operations of retail stores, engaging customers in choosing more sustainable products and lifestyle, accelerating energy efficiency and renewable energy, increasing the use of responsible materials and waste diversion.”

Ngai continued, “Under the Greener Stores Global Framework, A.S. Watson will be developing store designs that minimize its environmental impact from the full lifecycle of the store. This includes the increasing use of recyclable materials, explore ways to enhance energy efficiency, reduce waste, save water, all the way to end-of life disposal. The construction process will also be carefully planned and managed to ensure landfill and recycling targets are set together with local contractors.”

A.S. Watson’s first greener store is a Superdrug store in Peterborough’s Serpentine Green Shopping Centre in the U.K. opened last October. Sustainability has been a core focus of the store development process from conception to reality. The store features fully recyclable signages that were made from recycled yarn and plastic bottles. Its ceiling tiles were also made from bio-soluble mineral wool, clay and starch and is also 100% recyclable.

The store has also introduced several sustainability features including an AAA efficiency rate air conditioning system, a waste management target of 5% to landfills and using a reduced number of LED mood lights in the ceiling which led to a 37% saving on electricity. As a result, the store has managed to save 5,800 KWh of energy annually which is equivalent to a 1,200 kg CO2 annual reduction.

Emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive approach, Ngai added, “A.S. Watson Greener Stores Global Framework is not just about how we construct stores, it’s about creating a culture of sustainability inside and outside the organization. That’s why the Framework also comprises of initiatives to engage and inspire our colleagues, our customers, and our business partners to team up with us to build a better world.

Building a sustainable culture is not a one-off action; it’s a continuous effort to raise awareness of sustainability and bring behavioral changes to our people, customers as well as health and beauty industry as a whole. Providing a safe and healthy environment to our people and customers is just as important in our Greener Stores Global Framework. So, we truly believe that the Framework will ultimately bring an all-win situation to all parties.”

A.S. Watson has been actively reducing the environmental footprint of its products with a better selection of ingredients and packaging materials. Since 2014, A.S. Watson has banned the use of microplastics in its rinse-off exclusive cosmetics or personal care products. This ban was extended to all consumer brand products sold in all stores in 2020. A.S. Watson has also been working with its global supplier partners to offer over 1,600 Sustainable Choices products, in stores and online in Asia, making it easier for customers to find products that best suit their needs while contributing to a better world.

Every year, A.S. Watson serves 5.5 billion customers via its O+O (Offline plus Online) platform so it’s critical to engage and inspire our customers to do good to the planet with us. Besides providing Sustainable Choices products, we’ve been running a wide variety of programs that encourage customers to lead a sustainable lifestyle. In Europe, Superdrug is the first U.K. retailer to provide customers with a solution to recycle empty medicine blister packs in over 200 pharmacies. Thanks to the “Little Packs, Big Impact” recycling initiative, over 4.8 million blister packs have been recycled weighing over 10,000 kg. Meanwhile, at The Perfume Shop, for every perfume bottle that customers recycle, it donates the cost of planting one tree and its target is to plant 1 million trees by 2030.

In Asia, Watsons has rolled out a region-wide plastic containers recycling program to Go Green with its customers. In collaboration with supplier partners such as P&G and L'Oréal, over 1 million plastic containers have been collected and diverted from landfills and re-processed through local NGOs and recyclers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Ngai concluded, “A.S. Watson Greener Stores Global Framework is just a kick-off of our greener journey together with our customers as we continue to roll out initiatives to make our stores around the world more sustainable. We want to lead by example in setting a new benchmark for health and beauty retail, inspiring more businesses to follow suit and create more greener stores that help transform retail towards making a positive impact on the planet.”

An important message of hope at 2022 Sustainability Summit

Procter & Gamble recently announced that it hosted its 2022 Sustainability Summit for the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa (AMA) region. Built on the theme “Hope for our Home”, the Summit explored how corporations, non-profit organisations, governments and the wider community can work together to drive real change, bring hope to the world, and make it a better place to live.

Hosted virtually, the event featured world-renowned Ethologist and Conservationist Dr Jane Goodall, Circulate Capital Ocean Fund chief executive Rob Kaplan, as well as United Nations Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador, Dia Mirza, who came together to address key issues surrounding climate change.

At the summit, Dr Jane Goodall debunked the belief that corporations and non-profit organisations are standing at opposite sides. In a fireside chat with P&G Chief Brand Officer, Marc Pritchard, she shared that large corporations like P&G can take positive steps forward, create ripple effects around the globe, and encourage more consumers to take small, sustainable actions in their everyday lives.

“With annual GDP growth seemingly more important than our grandchildren’s future, the time is now to choose what sort of impact we can make. As more and more organizations like P&G drive change and join forces, there is hope. It’s time to get a new mindset and to see things differently. Everything is connected, and every one of us can make a difference," said Dr Jane Goodall.

During the Summit, P&G also announced regional progress made toward its Ambition 2030 Goals. With P&G President for Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, Magesvaran Suranjan, announcing the following progress made:

  • In May 2021, P&G pledged to launch 12 pilot reforestation projects in 12 months for its Forests for Good initiative. P&G has since launched more than 20 pilot reforestation projects in areas including the Jebal Ali Reserve Mangrove Forest in UAE, the Sierra Madre Mountain Range Forest in Philippines, the Embu Region in Kenya, along with other AMA countries including Uganda, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
  • P&G will continue investments in programs to conserve landscapes, protect species, and improve sustainable farming practices. These include working with the World Wildlife Fund Malaysia and the Emirates Marine Environmental Group in UAE to protect the Malayan Tiger and the endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtle respectively. P&G established a Smallholder Farmers Program across palm plantations in Malaysia since 2018, to help improve sustainable farming practices and the wellbeing of farmers, their families, and communities.
  • P&G has declared its commitment to run more than 85% of its plants across AMA on purchased renewable electricity by the end of 2022. To date, P&G has already achieved 87% with its AMA manufacturing sites.
  • Apart from 100% of P&G’s manufacturing sites being Zero Waste to Landfill, including the Philippines’ Cabuyao Manufacturing Plant, the company has also celebrated a significant milestone of having its first Zero Waste office in AMA, located in the Dubai site. P&G will progressively have more of these Zero Waste offices across the AMA region.
  • P&G has announced support for the Jane Goodall Institute and its flagship Roots & Shoots Program, which encourages and enables youth action to implement projects within P&G and in local communities that help animals and the planet.

Magesvaran Suranjan said: “We are fully committed to making a positive impact in the world and creating a sustainable future for generations to come. By integrating sustainability into the way that we do business every day, all of us at P&G are empowered to make a meaningful difference for our environment.”

P&G AMA’s Executive Sponsor of Sustainability, and Senior Vice President of P&G Japan, Standa Vecera commented: “We’ve already made significant progress over the past 10 years to reduce the environmental impact from our operations, and we know that we can do more. P&G has also set an ambition toward net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and will continue to step up with science-based targets to guide our efforts in being a Force for Good.”

Circulate Capital Ocean Fund CEO Rob Kaplan, and Actor, Producer and United Nations Environment Goodwill Ambassador, Dia Mirza, also shared their thoughts on encouraging sustainable actions

Rob Kaplan commented, "Nobody can stay on the side line. Sustainability is a team sport. It has to be at the core of both the company strategy and the operations in order to drive meaningful change. By working together there is hope. "

Dia Mirza said: "The Sustainable Development Goals are the North Star and if they are adopted and implemented everywhere we have a genuine chance of solving some of the biggest problems we face within this decade. Brands find a way into so many hearts and homes. If more brands like P&G leverage their power to drive change, there is hope for the planet."

P&G has set a new ambition to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its operations and supply chain, from raw material to retailer, by 2040 as well as interim 2030 goals to make meaningful progress this decade.

Adidas Originals and long-time partner Parley for the Oceans return with a collection of iconic styles, reimagined for a better tomorrow. From the Superstar to the Stan Smith, the Nizza to the Forum, and many more, over the past several decades adidas’ icons have left their mark on the sneaker world. This season, the brand with the Three Stripes and Parley have come together to bring these signature looks firmly into the future.

Already timeless in their own right, each sneaker in the Spring/Summer 2022 collection has been made with a yarn which contains at least 50% Parley Ocean Plastic — re-imagined plastic waste, intercepted on remote islands, beaches, coastal communities and shorelines, preventing it from polluting our ocean. The other 50% of the yarn is recycled polyester. Serving as just one of the innovations that represent adidas’ commitment to help End Plastic Waste, effortless style and progress come together for a collection where every step makes a difference.

Headlining the collection are two updated interpretations of the iconic Nizza silhouette: the Nizza Parley Hi and Nizza Parley Lo. A more efficient approach to material construction, both pairs are composed of wrapped webbing which is assembled layer by layer to minimize waste in the production process. The rest of the collection then plays host to a series of innovative takes on the Superstar, Nizza Hi, Stan Smith, ZX 8000, Forum Mid, Forum Low, and NMD_R1, as well as two women’s exclusives: the Forum Bold W and Nizza Platform W. Made-up in sleek black and white colorways, each sneaker is one is one step toward helping waste to not stay waste.

Accompanying the launch of the collection is a timeless campaign. Daringly stripped back in execution, the campaign images revel in the grey area in between; demonstrating that style and progress don’t have to be mutually exclusive. A confident expression of adidas’ design language, brought into a fresh new context, the composition draws on the collection’s inherently modern nature.

Today’s icons, made for tomorrow. The adidas Originals by Parley Spring/Summer 2022 collection arrives on April 22nd with rollout scheduled across different markets throughout the coming months.

Enjoy summer in full color

Global apparel retailer Uniqlo launches its color collection this month. “Clothes are meant to be joyful and we encourage everyone to express their creativity when dressing up this summer. Our wide color palette means our customers can mix and match the pieces according to their personalities. This stays true to our philosophy of LifeWear, which espouses creating clothing that’s universal in design and comfort, and made for everyone, everywhere,” said Georgette Jalasco, Uniqlo Philippines’ Vice President, Marketing.

If you’re going to the beaches of Palawan and Boracay, wear the Stretch Slim Fit Shorts in beige to mimic the beauty of the sandy beaches. Its sleek cut, design and fabric is perfect for a refined look while walking by the shoreline. Add color to your outfit with the U AIRism Cotton Crew Neck Oversized T-Shirt in purple. The shirt’s color complement the shorts. Its AIRism material allows you to keep cool and comfortable even under the sun.

Find an element of your destination and use it as a jumping point for your look. If you’re going hiking at the Masungi Georeserve this summer, you can be inspired by rock formations, the clear blue skies, or even flowers. The women’s Supima Cotton Crew Neck Short Sleeve T Shirt is a good choice, especially in pink, as the vibrant color can be seen in the flowers you’re sure to encounter. This shirt is made with Supima cotton, described as the world’s finest for its premium feel, for that elegant feel even in nature. You may also pair it with the Linen Cotton Shorts in blue for that cool and light feeling during this warm summer season.

Light colors are suitable for summer because they reflect heat and keep bodies cool. Dining al fresco in the city is perfect for laughing the afternoon away with loved ones, enjoying refreshing drinks, and dog-watching, so choose colors to keep you feeling clean and comfortable. Explore the dining destinations of Eastwood, Kapitolyo, Maginhawa, or Aguirre in BF Homes in the Mercerized Cotton Short Sleeve Mini Dress in green. The A-line cut gives it both a casual feel and a stylish silhouette. It’s also a versatile dress that can be worn on its own or layered.

White and yellow are always safe options if you just want to relax and keep cool. These are the best options if you want to lounge at any of the parks in Makati. The Ayala Triangle Gardens has benches, over a hundred trees, and space to unwind. Makati also has smaller parks around the central business district: the Washington Sycip Park is a quiet haven for soul-searching, the Legazpi Active Park has a jogging path, and the Jaime C. Velasquez Park features a children’s playground.

Breathe in the fresh air with the men’s Dry Pique Short Sleeve Polo Shirt in yellow. The yellow gives a light and breezy vibe, especially during hot days. Its dry function was added to further enhance the smooth and comfortable feel. This goes well with the Chino Shorts, which come in a relaxed cut. The finely-brushed cotton twill fabric is also comfortable and soft to the touch. This ensemble is refreshing to the eyes.

Those who like to express themselves can go for something vivid, like the Mercerized Cotton V Neck A Line Sleeveless Dress. Pink is eye-catching and effortlessly stylish. This is best showcased in a vibrant location such as the Bonifacio Global City. The cosmopolitan hub is also home to five-star hotels and cozy homestays for that relaxing staycation. The dress is versatile and can be worn as a casual garment while relaxing in a hotel’s luxurious bed.
