Horticulture 2010 garden show

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Horticultural Society, in cooperation with the Manila Seedling Bank Foundation (MSBF), headed by Chito Bertol, will hold “Horti 2010, It’s a Green World After All,” a flower and garden show, from Jan. 29 to Feb. 8 at the Manila Seedling Bank corner EDSA and Quezon Avenue, Quezon City.

“Horti 2010” is aimed at disseminating information on climate change. The show is composed of three sections: the exhibits of landscape and individual collection of plants that will make our world green; the lecture-demonstrations on how we can implement and maintain our environment beautiful through the green technologies; and the commercial section where one can shop for all the materials for the greening of our environment.

Some of the participants in the landscape design are King Louis Flowers and Plants, Jorge Mendoza, the Philippine Bonsai Society, Natural Stone Society, the Cactus and Succulent Society, Vic de Rona, Botchie Canicula, Constancio Basis, Lardy Abundo with Tess Baldonado, Rhea and Chito Luna, and the study groups on ferns, aroids and hoyas.

Winners will receive P10,000 in cash with trophy for the first prize in landscape category; P10,000 in cash with trophy for the Best Plant in Show and trophy for the first; medal for second and third prize winners in each category for the individual plants.

The working committee members for “Horti 2010” are Oscar Butch Duque, Wendy Relagado and Dorie Bernabe, over-all show chairs; Fernando Aurigue, judging and awards; George Yao, registration; May Dumlao, program and reception; Simon Salem, physical arrangement; Tess Baldonado, commercial stalls; Orlan Velasco, exhibits; Lina Gueco, lecture series; Elisa Montecastro, newsletter/souvenir program; Auring Lianko, opening program and master of ceremonies; and Victor Losanta, security.

Lecture-demonstrations on various aspects of gardening will also be held daily starting Jan. 30 at Greenhouse No. 2, Manila Seedling Bank Foundation, corner EDSA and Quezon Avenue, Quezon City.

The “Vermiculture for Organic Gardening” will be discussed by Tony de Castro on Jan. 30 at 10:30 a.m. At 2 p.m., avant-garde floral arrangement will be demonstrated by Pearl Banaag of World Flower Council.

On Jan. 31 at 10 a.m., POS president Carlos Lazaro will give a talk on “Orchid Growing for Business or Hobby,” while Mett Metilla will hold a demo on Ikebana (classical and free-style) for leisure and profit at 2 p.m.

Nanding Aurigue will give a talk on Philippine indigenous flowering plants — Doña Aurora and other Mussaendas — that should be our national flower instead of sampaguita, which is a native of India on Feb. 1 at 10 a.m.

Urban gardening on vegetables, herbs and ornamentals will be demonstrated by David Balilla on Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. to be followed by Mody Manglicmo on growing native ferns, their propagation and culture at 2 p.m.

On Feb. 3 at 10 a.m., Dan Parilla will give a talk on Reishi, the ancient secret of traditional medicine.

Patrick Gozon will discuss the Philippine native trees for landscaping and reforestation at 2 p.m.

Those who want to know the various backyard weeds that can be used for cooking should not miss Nonie Dolera’s demonstration on Feb. 4 at 10 a.m., while Nestor Gregorio will demonstrate aquatic gardening at 2 p.m.

Climate change will be discussed by Lourdes Tibig of Ateneo’s Manila Observatory on Feb. 5 at 10 a.m., while at 2 p.m., Anthony Arbias will show and share the importance of identifying Philippine native plants.

On Feb. 6 at 10 a.m., Jorge Sahagun will hold a talk on “Basic Gardening Made Easy,” while Vangie Go, who has a wide and rare variety of Anthuriums both flowering and foliage types will demonstrate how she hybridized the plants for exports at 2 p.m.

Zac Sarian will discuss “Money-Making Opportunities in Farming” on Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. Fely Gupit will demonstrate Saikei and stone appreciation at 2 p.m.

Philip Choo will also demonstrate the practical way of water-wise irrigation for the conservation of both plants and water on Feb. 8 at 10 a.m.
