The Culinary Education Foundation: Helping the less fortunate thru culinary education

-
"Give Fish a Chance," a cocktail, auction and dinner-show for the benefit of The Culinary Education Foundation, will be held on March 20, starting 6 p.m. at the Grand Ballroom of Hotel Inter-Continental, Ayala Center, Makati City.

The Culinary Education Foundation is the brainchild of Susana P. Guerrero, president of the Cravings Group of Companies. The idea was born out of a need for professionals in the food industry.

The demand is there, says Guerrero, and this presents a great opportunity for those who have the passion but do not have the means for a formal education or training in a reputable culinary school.

Together with the generous help of friends, the foundation is the realization of Guerrero’s dream to help the less fortunate acquire the training that can enable them to succeed in the food service industry.

Among the CEF programs that benefit from fund raising activities, like "Give Fish a Chance," are the Super Manang and CEF Scholarship Fund.

Super Manang is a project that teaches basic culinary skills to women of depressed communities. This is done in cooperation with the Inner Wheel Club, Sta. Maria de la Strada Parish and the La Vista Ladies Association. Each batch consists of 14 women chosen from CEF’s adopted community. Participants attend a 10-session training in culinary skills after which they undergo on-the-job training in the kitchens of Cravings restaurant. The CEF helps Super Manangs by way of making their expertise known and available to those who need manpower for catering or other food related activities.

The CEF Scholarship, meanwhile, is a full scholarship grant given to an underprivileged but deserving student for either a Diploma in Culinary Arts and Technology Management or a Certificate in Baking and Pastry Arts program of the Center for Culinary Arts, Manila, the only school dedicated to producing professional chefs in the country.

"Give Fish a Chance" opens with cocktails at 6 p.m., where guests may view the pieces for the night’s silent auction. Among the items up for bid are a complete carving set from Solingen, artworks by Llita Logarta and Benjie Reyes, and gift certificates from The Peninsula Manila, Holiday Inn and the Cravings Group.

Dinner and entertainment follows. Chef Genaro Cordova, CCA curriculum program coordinator, and CCA student Ritzi Uyquiengco will perform a suite of popular Broadway tunes, while violinist John Lesaca will perform a special number. Chef Fernando Aracama of Uva restaurant will give a talk on opportunities in the food service industry. The announcement of the night’s silent auction winners will be the highlight of the evening’s affair.

"Give Fish a Chance" is sponsored by San Miguel Corporation, makers of Monterey meat products, Purefoods-Hormel, Magnolia Chicken, Magnolia Butter, Cheese and Whip & Top, Hotel Inter-Continental Manila and Silver Swan Soy Sauce.

Tickets are at P1,500 and are available at The CEF, Cravings Center, 287 Katipunan Ave., Quezon City. For reservations and information, call 426-48-25, 426-48-41 local 105 or fax 426-48-36.
