Phone brand teams up with local artisans for recycled bags
MANILA, Philippines — Phone brand Oppo collaborated with artisans from design house Rags2Riches (R2R) to create a creative collection of bags made from recycled fabric.
Several artisans from R2R — who originate from areas such as Tondo and Payatas — teamed up with the phone brand's ambassadors to come up with four unique bags in the collection.
Each brand ambassador offered their insights on their respective bag's creation as the artisans utilized traditional techniques and modern aesthetics.
As with any R2R product, the bags are made from pre-production deadstock fabric and other sustainable material cast out in the middle of a supply chain.
The rectangular Pixel Crossbody Bag has upcycled fabric woven into a Blocks pattern, genuine leather trims, a top zip closure, an exterior back zip pocket and cotton fabric lining. Both the bag's detachable straps are genuine leather, and even comes with a bag charm in the form of a key ring and upcycled fabric tassels.
The multi-purse Ring Sling Bag has a leather drawstring pouch, a round zip purse and a phone sleeve in jersey woven panel — all of which are attached to a round ring through metal hooks. It also comes with a detachable, adjustable leather strap.
The Loop Bag is R2R's first completely hand-stitched bag. The knot bag has no other components but the fabric, unstitched and unlined with no machine used.
The Onigiri Dumpling Bag is made with indigenous fabric in Binetwagan weaves. Its other features are authentic cowhide leather trims, a magnetic snap top closure, cotton fabric lining and inner side snaps that give its onigiri shape.
Each bag costs P3,500. All proceeds from the collection will go to the artisans who worked on the bags through an education and digital transformation fund that will aid them and their families.
