Are Filipino gentlemen a vanishing breed?

Filipino gentlemen seem to be a vanishing breed. My teenage daughter’s boyfriend honks his horn when he fetches my daughter. He doesn’t always open doors for her! Please comment. – Mrs. X
Breeding, like charity, begins at home. Your daughter’s boyfriend may not have been taught the finer points of how to treat a woman with chivalry – either at home or in school. If your daughter is dissatisfied with this kind of treatment, she should speak up and ask for better behavior. It might be awkward for you to tutor him, since you’re not his mother. But it would surely be a better world if boyfriends would politely knock and at least open doors for their girlfriends.

I heard that in a certain Catholic church, women who come in spaghetti-strapped blouses are given shawls to wear or else they can’t enter. Hello, this is the 21st century! Isn’t this too much contrived modesty? – Missy
Not to downplay the status of the Catholic church, but think of any establishment that enforces a dress code, like a fine-dining restaurant. These places provide formal jackets for men who may not be appropriately dressed for the occasion. Just as we follow the unwritten code of such establishments, women should respect the rules of this church, regardless of the fact that this is the 21st century. Wearing a shawl over a spaghetti-strapped top is a sign – not of modesty – but of respect. – Mary
