Taking the plunge

Dear Mary,
What do you think about plunging necklines? Can anyone wear them?
After what weve seen on TV, the movies, magazines, and some movie/society types, Im pretty blasé about it, but sometimes I feel like saying, "Watch out, something might fall out." Certainly anyone can wear a plunging neckline if you are so inclined. Actually, women with small busts tend to look better than those with large bosoms. They dont look as voluptuous. Your choice: stylish or sexy, although it could be both.

Dear Lucy,
My dad just gave me a very large silk scarf from his recent trip abroad. Its very lovely, with all the nice colors, and I absolutely love it! However, I dont know where and how to use them. Ive seen a picture of you wearing what looks like a scarf worn as a top when you went to see Jerry Yan in Hong Kong last year. You look gorgeous! How do you wear a scarf as a top without baring too much? In what other ways is a silk scarf useful? How do you accessorize it?

I so love scarves! And yes, I often use my scarves as tops although the one you saw me wearing during the Jerry Yan meeting in Hong Kong actually was not one. It was a ready-to-wear top that I bought off the rack. When I use a scarf as a top, I do so in one of three ways (although I suppose there are more ways that I have yet to discover). When in a hurry, I just drape it around my body several times like a tube top, tie it snugly on one side (usually somewhere near my armpit) and secure the knot with a pretty brooch. Sometimes I also wear it by slipping the scarf behind me, crisscrossing it up front and securing it around my neck (this usually requires a large size so that it drapes in front beautifully). Another option would be to hold the scarf squarely in front of you, tie two sides around your neck and the other two at the back of your waist. This will create a blouson, billowy effect in front and a very bare back. In all three ways I described above you can use a bandeau or a tube top under so that you dont feel like you are baring too much. When you go to the beach, a scarf is the next best thing you can bring after your swimsuits because you can use it as a headband, a sarong/cover-up, a top, a belt, a wrap to keep you warm, or you can just nonchalantly knot it around one of the handles of your beach tote as an accent. Any way you choose to do it, enjoy the pretty results and dont forget to smile.

Dear Tingting,
A lot of moms in my daughters school say that many girls have started menstruating at age 9, although this age is quite young. I am not really worried because I have started telling my 8-year-old daughter about having periods and she understands it. My concern is more on how to address the changes that my daughter will be facing, like when she starts growing underarm hair or starts having body odor. Is it advisable to let her use deodorants at an early age, or is it safer to use plain tawas? Should I teach her to shave or pluck her underarms, or just let them be? My own mother didnt really teach me about these things and now I have bad-looking underarms. I dont want my daughter to have underarms like mine. Please advise so that I will know what to do when the time comes.
Yes, let her use deodorants. Tell her to wash herself very well. Find the mildest deodorant and work yourself up to a stronger one if she is into sports. Tawas is very good, too. Yes, teach her to shave her underarm hair. For bad-looking underarms, find a deodorant with a whitening ingredient.
