Marks & Spencer ceasing Philippine operations this May

MANILA, Philippines — British retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) will no longer operate in the Philippine beginning May 3 this year.
Stores Specialists Inc. (SSI) addressed talks about M&S' closure in a company announcement shared to the Philippine Stock Exchange and obtained by Philstar.com.
SSI confirmed the final day of M&S store operations in the Philippines is on May 2, 2026, signifiying the end of the establishment's presence in the country after almost 40 years.
"This has not been an easy decision," SSI management said. "Building M&S in the Philippines has been a meaningful and rewarding chapter for our organization. We are deeply grateful to our loyal customers, dedicated employees, and partners who have supported the brand through the decades."

SSI cited the continued evolution of consumer tastes and shopping behaviors, making them believe it "prudent and necessary to channel energy and resources toward brands that reflect the current and future direction of the market."
The company owned by the Tantoco family acknowledged the significance of the changes regarding M&S but also that change itself is an essential part of growth.
"Retail is constantly transforming. Change is inevitable, tastes evolve, and therefore so should we," said management. “We remain committed to the constant strengthening of our portfolio and delivering experiences that resonate with today's consumers."
The announcement ended with SSI saying it would work closely with employees, partners, and stakeholders for a proper transition in the days leading up to May 2, with any further details to be communicated in due course.
