Sandara Park, Thalia offer supportive messages for Mindanao quake victims
MANILA, Philippines — Support for victims of the recent Mindanao earthquake is emerging from all corners of the globe, including from star-studded hands.
Last Monday, June 8, a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off Sarangani, killing residents, damaging buildings, and triggering tsunami warnings across parts of the region.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the offshore quake was caused by movement along the Cotabato Trench, the same structure linked to the deadly 1976 Moro Gulf earthquake and tsunami.
Several world leaders vowed to send aid or prayers for those affected including Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Support also came from global celebrities, primarily among then Korean singer and 2NE1 member Sandara Park, who has close ties to the Philippines, having kickstarted her career here.
In an Instagram story, Sandara said her heart went out to everyone affected by the Mindanao earthquake.
"Mindanao holds a special place in my heart, and I still remember the love and warmth I received there," the singer also said. "I'm praying for everyone's safety, strength, and recovery."
The "Queen of Latin Pop" Thalía issued a message of support, this time on her X account.

Thai actor Tawan Vihokratana, better known as Tay, also posted on X and in Filipino, "Sa ating mga kaibigang Pilipino, nabalitaan ko ang tungkol sa lindol at nais ko pong ipaabot ang aking taos-pusong suporta at panalangin para sa inyong kaligtasan. Ingat po kayong lahat."

Even the official social media account for the Malaysian animated kids series "Upin & Ipin" issued a message of support, giving it in both English and Malay.
"Today, we send our love and support to the people of Mindanao following the recent offshore earthquake and tsunami warnings that have affected communities across the region," the series' post went.
