Beauty heroines from books to film

- Geolette Esguerra - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - After admiring their beauty on paper, we turn to the big screen where our beauty heroines come alive. From DC’s Selina Kyle to the charming but elusive Daisy Buchanan in

The Great Gatsby

, we teach you how to achieve the literary heroine look with just a few key products.

Daisy Buchanan, The Great Gatsby (December)

We’ve known Baz Luhrmann for his highly visual depictions of specific eras like Romeo+Juliet or Moulin Rouge so we’re quite excited about his adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel that has Leonardo Di Caprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. The heroine, Daisy Buchanan, is known to be charming and quite the fashion plate of her time with her flapper dresses and her bejeweled headgear.

Get the look:

1. The key is to play up the eyes and lips, with the cheeks getting the faintest hint of blush as an afterthought.

2. For the 1920s café society look — extend the eyebrows downward way past the eyes.

3. Instead of going all-out with smoky eye, the look now is comprised on a soft smoky eye with hints of dark raspberry and brown, mixed with a slight shimmer. Apply the darkest shade to the far corner of the eye and add shimmer over the eyelid.

4. Line the eyes with black liquid liner.

5. Dab a dark pink lip color and proceed to blot the sheen for a stain effect.

Sam, The Perks of Being a Wallflower (September)

We loved the book, and we’re sure we’ll also love the film adaptation that is directed by the author, Stephen Chbosky. While the coming-of-age movie revolves around Charlie (Logan Lerman) who is actually the wallflower in the novel, his stepsister Sam (Emma Watson) is also a big part of Charlie’s journey to discovery. Sam, as Charlie’s major love interest, keeps a natural yet saccharine sweet look throughout the film.

Get the look:

1. Sam’s look is very natural but still quite polished, so the skin should be matte.

2. In the movie, Sam starts out with a barely-there pinkish eye color, and the shade goes a tad darker in some scenes.

3. A key is in the brows — keep it strong and neatly shaded with brow powder.

4. Add sweep of pink blush for a dash of color.

5. A pale pink lip color completes the look.

Selina Kyle, The Dark Knight Rises (July)

Christopher Nolan introduced the character of Selina Kyle/Catwoman in his third installment of the trilogy with much aplomb — with actress Anne Hathaway even getting a heads up from US President Barrack Obama. Catwoman’s look is very worldly and sophisticated, characterized by strong brows, strong eyes and a strong red lip she dons in several scenes.

Get the look:

1. Pick out a brow color one shade darker than your hair, the idea is to keep a consistent, graceful line that tapers at the end.

2. Keep the powder very matte and add shine only in select areas like under the eyes or over the brows. The look is woman-of-the-night, and not sun-kissed.

3. Apply a dark plum color all over the lids but avoid smoking it out for a more polished look.

4. Apply liquid liner over the eye, and a soft brown pencil underneath to line the eyes.

5. Use a deep crimson shade to complete the look.

Marylou, On the Road (December)

Based on Jack Kerouac’s semi-autobiographical novel of the same name that defined the Beat Generation, comes this long-awaited screen adaptation by Francis Ford Coppola (who acquired the rights as early as 1979). The final version is directed by Water Salles of The Motorcycle Diaries and stars Sam Riley as Sal Paradise (Jack Kerouac’s alter-ego), Garrett Hedlund as Dean Moriarty (based on Dean Cassady), and Kristen Stewart as Dean’s wife, Marylou (based on LuAnne Henderson). Marylou offers a glimpse of a 16-year-old girl/woman who has an uninhibited sensuality about her.

Get the look:

1. Focus on fresh, dewy skin with a bit of sheen — achievable via skincare.

2. For strong brows, eyebrow pencil in shades of medium brown.

3. Keep the eye area monochromatic with a copper cream color shade.

4. A dab of light coral stain on the cheeks for the look of a ruddy-cheeked lass.

5. Finish off with red-coral lip stain for a your-lips-but-better look.
