Brides revisited
MANILA, Philippines - Weddings call to mind images of blushing brides in lovely white gowns. But who says that wedding gowns need to be white? Or conventionally lovely? Back in the old days, a bride’s gown had to be all white to symbolize her purity. Nowadays, symbolism gives way to style as more and more weddings reflect the styles of their celebrants. “Wedding gowns are so soft and feminine but not bride’s that kind of girl,” says Sidney Yap, who styled this feature. “It’s basically black and white, and reflects a bride that’s a little bit tougher, a little bit stronger.”
To go with the gowns, Sidney chose accessories that were still glamorous, but with a rough yet elegant edge. Leather, metal and the color black, formerly taboo, take center stage. And let’s not forget boots, the ultimate “tough chick” accessory. There are different ways to break out of the wedding mold while wowing the guests, starting with a few unexpectedly glamorous trends.
Instant eye candy
“A bubble hem or a tiered bubble dress is a choice for grand allure,” Sidney says. A corset in a contrasting color adds a touch of dark romance to the ensemble. Choice accessories such as a feather rosette and garter cuffs amp up the glam.
Who says the bride has to wear white? “If you live in black, why get married in anything else?” Sidney asks. “Do a Sarah Jessica Parker and ditch the white frock.” Only for the truly daring, a black wedding gown will ensure that you are the talk of the town.
Sweat the small stuff
Sometimes, classics are still the way to go. It’s how you accessorize that counts. Take a lush, ruffled dress from sweet to stare-worthy by pairing it with strong pieces. In this case, a big necklace and biker boots.
A halter is another classic that doesn’t have to be safe. Intricate details — not necessarily beadwork — spell romance and femininity, without sacrificing personal style.
Go for grand
A bride who wants a more structured look can go with pleats — that go sideways. The dress accentuates the bride’s figure, without sacrificing drama. A big necklace and strategically placed brooches give the eye something to focus on while black gloves tell the world that the bride knows how to party.
Vo-vo-volume is another way to get va-va-voom. Studded boots add attitude to this romantic number. Great for the bride who likes to rebel on the inside.
Weddings are all about the couple taking the vows. If the bride and the groom happen to be on the stylishly adventurous side, all the better. As far as trends go, weddings seem to be moving out of the 15th century and into the 21st.
