Last day of school

Ralph Mendoza and Sam Potenciano - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The sun was out that Saturday morning as we headed to a village in Makati. Construction was on hold, giving the area peace and quiet, embodied mostly by sleepy cats and stout chickens.

The same laidback cool can be said of models Bruce Venida and Maan Marquez, casually mixing thrift clothing into their outfits. Be it an inverted floral button-down or a five-panel Suzuki racing cap from the ‘90s, outfits are easily spruced up with touches of thrift.

We live in a thrift paradise, too, so that helps. Ukay-ukay stores are everywhere, offering a limited supply of anything you can think of, from black leather jackets to denim knapsacks, from Lanvin dress shirts to Uniqlo oxfords — all with discounts and chances to haggle a P150 shirt down to P90.

A few words of caution, though. Make sure you disinfect. Give your loot a thorough wash before you start wearing it. And try to balance second-hand with something new for a little high-low contrast. At the end of the day, it’s all about finding something of value in the most unlikely of places. Thrift won’t let you down if you sift hard enough.
