Somedaydream: Fresh sound

THE DIALOGUE - Raymond Gutierrez -

If you happen to be one of those who heard a catchy new tune on the radio entitled Hey Daydreamer and thought it was a nice new foreign track — well, you were mistaken. The synth-heavy, electro-pop track is purely OPM and was written by a one-man band, a young guy who goes by the name of Somedaydream.

Due to the fact that he didn’t win a reality show — nor did he come from a disbanded group — Somedaydream’s rise to fame might seem shrouded in mystery. But in reality, he’s just an average guy who happens to create his own music at home. The only difference from all the basement-produced songs out there is that he actually has a hit. Hey Daydreamer has been getting a lot of radio airplay and fans are looking forward to more breakthroughs from this rising music act. Somedaydream represents youth culture today — unafraid to take matters into their own hands to create something new. His sound is refreshing so we’re placing our bets on this one.

YOUNG STAR: What inspired you to get into the music industry?

SOMEDAYDREAM:At first, it was really more of an experiment. I started the solo project in 2009 when I was 18, I just got my first synthesizer and I wanted to try producing my own music, seeing that a lot of the artists that I admire do the same. After producing and releasing three songs on the Internet, my songs got a lot of attention from my friends, and I started getting very nice feedback from listeners as well. From then on, I started taking it a bit more seriously.

Who are your musical influences?

Somedaydream’s music is greatly influenced by the new pop electronic artists that have been popping out in the international scene these past few years. Adam Young of Owl City and Luis Dubuc of The Secret Handshake are two of my biggest musical influences. I also love listening to other artists like Daft Punk, Katy Perry and The Maine.

How does it feel that your song is getting a lot of radio airplay and a lot of attention?

Honestly, it still feels like it’s too good to be true. I’m quite overwhelmed by all the attention I’m getting ‘cause I wasn’t really expecting it. I’m very grateful to everybody who listened and voted for it on the radio. I feel very blessed that I’m getting help, support and love from everybody.

What sets your music apart?

I think the sound sets it apart more than anything else. As much as possible, I want to be really creative when it comes to making and conceptualizing the sounds and instruments I want to hear in a song. I really find it fun and challenging to use synthesizers and effects as well as creating great beats.

If you could sit front row at any concert, whose would it be?

Daft Punk! I’ve idolized them since I was a kid.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I want to be the best person and the best musician I can be. Hopefully I can also share my music with many people. In 10 years, hopefully, I will have already contributed to our local music industry in my own small way.

What’s next for Somedaydream?

Right now everything is new to me. I’m still trying to learn and absorb everything I can from my peers and my mentors. We’re taking things slow, taking baby steps along the way. I guess the best thing to do right now is to hope for the best and share the music with everybody.
