MYOH: Pinoy pride
It’s that time of year again. Yup, the time when flip-flop enthusiasts gather at Rockwell in droves to personalize their very own pair of slippers. Indeed, it’s time once again for the “Make Your Own Havaianas” (MYOH) event. This year, though, it’s even bigger and better than before.
To be sure, after four years of bringing the Havaianas-loving crowds this incredible event, this year it’s bigger than ever before, invading the Rockwell Tent with dozens of styles, colors, pins, and embellishments sure to catch every flip-flop fanatics’ fancy!
Opening last Tuesday in a special media event hosted by Drew Arellano and Bianca Gonzales, the Fourth MYOH presented a short chic fashion show showcasing all the styles, soles, straps, pins and colors available for the evening. Indeed, with an incredibly wide variety of colors, straps, and embellishments, it’s unbelievably hard to decide what to get.
The throngs of media and guests walked around and looked at different color wheels of soles and straps in the Top and Slim line while deciding what colors to get and what pins to add. As for myself, it took me quite a while to decide on what colors I wanted and if I wanted pins or Swarovski crystals to go along with it.
Not to mention, this year not only does MYOH offer cute and funky pins like the TV set and camera, they also offer special Pinoy Pride cultural pins like a sorbetero ice cream cart, a tarsier (which was a crowd favorite), a jeepney, a Noypi, and other prominent symbols of Filipino pride. As Terry S.A.’s Anne Gonzalez put it: “These cultural pins allow us to showcase our special relationship between these much-loved Brazilian flip-flops and their loyal Filipino clientele.”
While guests enjoyed the fashion show and the delicious food, what was obviously at the back of everyone’s mind was what special pair of flip-flops to choose. Sure enough, once the stalls opened, it was almost pandemonium with people lining up to secure their choices. I opted to just enjoy the event and take my time waiting instead of battling the crowds. And sure enough, when there was an opening I made my way to the counter and got a too-cute pair of gold slims with an ice cream cart pin.
So, for those of you flip-flop fanatics like myself, the MYOH event 2009 opened its doors to the public yesterday and is on-going until June 1; so be sure to bring your friends and family over and make your own personalized pair. Styles, colors, sizes, and embellishments are available while supplies last so don’t wait!
