Living on the wedge

- AT LIBERTY By  Jackie Cohe -

Deciding what to sport on our feet while bearing the summer heat can truly leave us in a bind. Without a doubt, flip-flops are staple summer picks but they are best reserved for lounging at the pool, chilling on the beach or running around town in casual mode.  Sneakers seem too hot to trot in as perspiration can kick in quickly and, besides, when do you honestly wear them aside from action-based events? Stilettos and all types of killer heels always look stealth but seem highly impractical and way too fussy for a regular summer day.

Fortunately, we have the wedge, which embodies everything summer-like.  A personal favorite of mine, it hits the nail on the head in quite a few ways.

Without shame, I stand petite and proud, as does most of the Pinay population. However, a few added inches are always welcome and wedge heels serve a meaningful purpose in elongating our legs. As I slip them on I am three inches taller in an instant. While I am a major fan of ballet flats for comfort and ease, I know deep in my heart that wedges trump ‘em for better proportions. How can you not love looking tall?

Not only does it do wonders for height, wedges are extremely comfortable. Since the entire foot is anchored, instead of just the heel, the weight is distributed, paving the way for sizeable support in holding the load and making our strides more stable.

Highly covetable for height and comfort reasons, they also look just so damn cute. There are so many versions out now that the only difficulty one may have is deciding which one to purchase. A perfect blend of form and function, I’m guilty of having a few pairs in my shoe stash. I’ve amassed a bunch over time, which I can wear time and time again as they are classic summer shoes.

Canadian brand Aldo carries a slew of wedges in a variety of styles that can excite the Imelda in all of us. Whether you swing for slides or slingbacks, there’s sure to be a pair to tickle your fancy. Bases made of cork or wood topped with metallic leather or shades of neutral bands are the stuff of shoe lovers’ dreams. Aldo’s wedges can go from day to night and incorporate the lift-off factor, ease of effort and fashionista statements all at once.

Paired with dresses, skirts and shorts, wedges act as an anchor to ground your entire outfit. If you are thinking of wearing pants, opt for a more flowy style rather than a skinny leg to prevent your feet from looking like tree trunks — that is, very stumpy.

One thing that can’t be neglected is your pedicure. Treat those piggies well as they peek out of whichever style wedge you prefer.
