When in heat, shop

JACKIE O’FLASH - JACKIE O’FLASH By Bea J. Ledesma -
This summer’s staples channel English gardens with gemlike greens and luscious florals and the surf’s cerulean blue and crisp white. For those on a budget, shopping for key summer pieces won’t be a headache. All you need is a friend with good taste and some mineral water to beat the heat.

Market Market’s fashion section, on the building’s second floor, is filled with little kiosks selling everything from bags and shoes from Bangkok to wigs and rugs from India all at reasonable prices.

So, before heading to the stores, check out YStyle’s fashion file for budget pieces that look anything but. With our list of fun inexpensive goods and a budget of a few hundred pesos, shopping will never be the same again. At least that’s what you’ll be telling your mom when she asks if you went over-budget on your latest shopping trip. Now, you’ll finally have the satisfaction of having the last word.

If the cheesy store name makes you cringe, the merchandise more than makes up for it. Bags in friendly sizes – from casual work-friendly totes and shoulder bags to beach-ready carriers – come in Lily Pulitzer-inspired prints. Tropical colors like coral, bright green and earthy brown are the main paint palettes that owner Anna Catanghal dips into. All the bags are made locally by the store owner, which means that you won’t see someone else sporting the same chic knit satchel at the mall. Even their handmade jewelry, like this too-cute-to-be-true banana yellow necklace, is made up of one-of-a-kind pieces. It’s sure to make your friends green with envy, for which makes them a perfect foil to your tropical print handbag. Stamped

A gamut of colorful tops, shorts and beachwear litter this store’s small space – not exactly revolutionary stuff. But their prices certainly are. Board shorts in punchy colors are priced at P100, while the reversible version (which comes with two colorful prints) are P200. Before you faint from excitement, make sure to check their sporty capri sets and cute punk princess tees.

Woven pants may seem alien to cotton-loving Filipinos, but Ziya’s version, in a cool weave with funky fringe, is all about beach boho chic. Marvel at tops trimmed in gold and ethnic images and wrap skirts that can move from casual street to country club fair.

If shoes are your thing, then SNS is the place for you. Every corner of their space is filled with shoes – from beaded formal numbers to handpainted bakya-inspired sandals. You’ll have to run and grab whatever you can because this store is already known for their fab footwear that comes with a really – and we mean really – cheap pricetag. Their latest pieces are wooden flats that come with reversible ribbons and brown wedges with leather trim that looks perfect for summer.

Voltaire Villareal

Known for their ethnic bags and made-to-order clutches (bags personalized with photos or magazine clippings), Villareal now has an accessible store filled with all sorts of decadent goodies. Their fun fur-covered pieces look like something from Legally Blond while their more sedate bags are sophisticated numbers that look way pricier than they really are. Take note of their ethnic doctor’s bag, a luxuriously earth-toned bag covered in cream, brown and yellow wooden buttons. Their large hobo, available in pink and green, looks fit for a super stylish over-packer.
