Today’s Most Envied Bodies (Part 8)
August 9, 2002 | 12:00am
These days, having a million-peso body is synonymous to spending millions. But for actor and model Christian Vasquez, all it takes is perseverance!
Breaking into the modeling scene over a year ago, Christian, the lad from Bacolod, had since monopolized the male modeling planet with photos of chiseled abs to match that chiseled face.
"When I started modeling here in Manila, I became thinner because I didn’t get the chance to go to any gym. I couldn’t afford it at the time," he says. Those struggling years were spent under the roof of his modeling agency where he lived for a while.
Being a self-professed outdoor enthusiast, his athleticism was sustained by simple, cheap yet strenuous sports that became his claim to good biceps and toned legs. Rock climbing and mountain climbing matched his workout, which he started doing when he was 17. Now, he is still very much into recreation. He’s fond of going to the beach. "But I don’t really do beach sports like scuba diving, jet skiing and wakeboarding. Expensive eh."
By now you’re probably thinking he’s a top-class miser. Then again, his eating habits will prove you wrong. Contrary to popular belief, he does not watch what he eats. "I eat anything as long as it’s balanced. Whenever I stop working out, I lose a lot weight. That is why I tend to eat a lot, in order to gain it. And if there is excess, I burn it in the gym. I can’t do with zero-fat food." Yes, he is blessed with good metabolism, if you could just die of envy…
Now that he has a very "supportive" PLDT ad, a sitcom slot and has become a top endorser of various products, Christian could just live comfortably. If that means membership in a sports club, he could easy acquire it.
How did you develop the desire to stay fit?
I guess after seeing results, I learned to like to stay fit.
What are the right attitudes, mindset and traits to staying fit?
Discipline, hard work and being result-oriented.
How do you manage to balance work with your healthy lifestyle?
I don’t work everyday so it’s not hard for me to go to the gym regularly. Becoming healthy and fit is part of my job.
Which do you spend more time on, your looks or your body?
I focus more on my body.
Do you still get insecure or conscious about your body?
Yup! I always get insecure.
Which part of your body do you think needs more improvement?
My legs.
Which part of your body are you proud enough to flaunt?
My shoulders.
How do you feel when a person gets more attracted to your body than your personality?
I don’t really care. I mean, a person whom I just met won’t notice my personality right away. The same goes for people who only see me in pictures.
