Dave Navarro: rock star, author, tortured soul
November 20, 2001 | 12:00am
When you have a rock and roll resume like Dave Navarro’s (he’s the "roving" guitarist for Jane’s Addiction and the Red Hot Chili Peppers), it’s impossible to be PG-13.
Past exploits include sporting a see-through lace skirt on stage and making out with Anthony Kiedis in a Chili Peppers video, to name a tame few. Dave’s naughty-cool allure certainly doesn’t hurt his reputation as on of rock’s most excessive sidemen. But we’re not surprised to see a softer side of the high profile rocker. With his first solo album, Trust No One, Dave delivers truly touching internal confessions. "I needed to exercise my darkness," he says. Can you relate? He’s also just released a book, Don’t Try This At Home, in which he talks candidly about his wild, rock star life, complete with pictures of at-the-party celebrity friends taken in his home photo-booth. Cool. With all this madness, we had to ask Dave what calms his dark demons. Look below.
Stardust Memories (MGM)
"Woody Allen’s Stardust Memories is one of my favorites. I am the biggest Woody Allen fan. It’s his autobiography, and what I like about the film is that it highlights his loneliness in the public eye even though he’s surrounded by admirers."
Massive Attack (Virgin)
Mezzanine
"The one CD that is always in my CD changer is Massive Attack’s Mezzanine because it’s the greatest album ever made. And the door to my CD changer is jammed!"
The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment
By Eckhart Tolle
"My favorite book is called The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment. This book found me, I didn’t find it. It has become part of my everyday life. Once I finish it, I start again."
