Running in the rain

- Nuffnang blogger Kikayrunner -

Don't let the wet season stop you from getting a good run workout. Here are some sensible tips to keep you running safely even in the rain:

1. Keep in sight

Visibility drops, especially during the torrential downpours we see often in our tropical country. Make sure you're wearing bright colors and reflectors just to let other occupants of the road (i.e. cyclists, motorcyclists, car drivers) know you're there. Also, if you must run in the rain, do it while there's daylight. You want to be able to see where you're going so you don't fall into any open manholes obscured by puddles of water.

2. Keep close to home

It's quite an adventure to seek out new roads to run, but unfamiliar territory during a rain storm can pose a hazard to a lone runner (think of getting stranded by a flash flood). Choose a well-lit, populated route you know quite well so you can call for help easily if you need it.

3. Keep warm, get dry

Getting wet in the rain isn't a direct cause of illness. Rather, your immunity drops when you get chilled by the rain; that gives the cold or the flu a foothold. Don't go out for a run in the rain if you're already feeling a bit run down. Stay warm during your run by dressing appropriately (a light running jacket keeps the heat close to your body and fends off most of the rain), change into dry clothes immediately after your run, and take a shower as soon as you get home.
