Have a Merry, Green Christmas!

- Jeffrey Azor Osoc -

MANILA, Philippines - Christmas is a festivity eminent for barefaced consumption. Show off respect to the environment by assenting off-beat Christmas lores this year. “Going green” is in. It’s becoming more favored and well-received, but what’s more important:  It’s good for you, your family, and for Mother Earth. And it doesn’t take a lot of time, energy, effort and money to resolve, restyle and reorganize your holiday habits in order to make a change and steer clear of damaging the environment. This is what Greenpeace and the Makati City administration wants to prod and pound on us — “GrEEn Christmas”!

Celebrating “Going Green”

“GrEEn Christmas” was launched last Nov. 21 at the Glorietta 3 Park as part of the Energy Efficient Makati project egging on the public in reducing their carbon footprint in the environment by following simple, efficient guidelines this Christmas season. The event was highlighted by the ceremonial lighting of a solar-powered parol (Christmas lantern). The ceremonial switching/lighting of the “solar parol” features energy-efficient lights (using LED lights) and solar panels to power it. It will be on display until the Dec. 27.

There were also gadgets displayed, powered by the sun or solar radiation, to show the public that they can opt for renewable energy like mobile/mp3 chargers, radio and flashlight,  to name a few and start lessening their dependence on power plants run by fossil fuels. “Energy efficiency is a cost-effective way to achieve a sustainable energy in the future and reduce the need for investment in energy infrastructure,” said Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay.
