101 ways to dress up your Christmas wreath

- Yasmine C. Hidalgo -
Christmas is a time for the family even in individualistic societies like those of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, thus it calls for a big celebration. Everybody keeps a tab on the Christmas calendar. (Even cats have a Christmas calendar!) Every day, in many a home, there’s a little door, which when opened, reveals a chocolate or a nice picture. But the focus of the celebration is the Christmas wreath, around which are four candles. Starting the first Sunday of December, they light one of the four candles. Then on December 6, these German-speaking countries celebrate Saint Nikolaus Day, when Santa Claus comes to visit households.

Speaking of Christmas wreaths, did you know that there are a hundred and one ways to dress up your Christmas wreath? We visited the Christmas Exhibition of the Palmengarten in Frankfurt and interviewed floral arrangement expert Kim Phung Thai. In addition to having a successful flower shop in Frankfurt called Phoenix Flowers, she did all the arrangements at the Frankfurt Fair. Having viewed the exhibit and the arrangements for sale at the Phoenix flower shop, one can conclude that Christmas decor need not be expensive because the materials you need could just be lying in your own backyard.

Yes, the use of natural materials was the trend in Christmas decorating. Materials like fresh cherry and apple, dried orange slices, lemons, berries, mushrooms and pine cones jazzed up what would have been a plain-looking Christmas wreath. For example, Kim Phung Thai utilizes unusual materials that no one would have imagined would make fantastic accents such as dried vegetables like zucchini or dried chili, cinnamon sticks, twigs, moss grass and dried leaves. For a Christmas glow effect, she sprayed the leaves with gold and silver paint. Wreaths were not only placed on the table – they were hung on the wall, the ceiling and the door. Wreaths also came in just one candle, others only formed the wreath shade but were made of moss. The candles were placed in the four different positions: Top left and right, bottom right and left.

The key is to have a natural-looking Christmas wreath, to perk up a traditional Christmas decor. Christmas trees ranged from the traditional to plants shaped to form a Christmas tree. Poinsettias were also bunched up to form a Christmas tree . Garden decor included reindeer in twigs, snowmen on a sleigh with moss and twigs. Big vases were filled with natural materials – not flowers – to add a distinct character to the overall Christmas look. Providing more ideas for divine Christmas decorations were the golden cherubims as backdrop for Christmas bells, table napkins and ceramics. Star-shaped plates and cookie plates with holly and green leaf decor added a sumptuous dash of Christmas. Decorations for the table like Christmas tree and star cutouts in cartolina added merriment to the Christmas setting. For a white Christmas effect, add some small strips of crumpled Japanese white paper and spray some white paint to create snow. Green beads forming a Christmas tree as well as candles all around the table evoke a vision of a holy night.
