Colored jeans are back

Chonx Tibajia - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Some time in 2012, I owned a pair of burgundy wax-washed jeans. It was the closest I’ve ever come to wearing colored pants, though it looked more like a wearable crime scene than a fashion statement. This season, colored jeans return — not in shades of coagulated blood, but in brighter, fresher shades, which Old Navy calls “soft wash,” on their classic Rockstar jeans.

Not quite primary, not quite pastel, the new colors seemed to have been plucked directly from your Pinterest board — a mossy green that indicates utility and aversion to color; a blush pink made rugged with tears at the knees; a blunt yellow that won’t make you look like a banana; and an oceanic aqua that’s as neo nautical as it gets. Classic colors like red, white and blue also get more dimension as coral, ochre and teal. They are figure-flattering and come in either full or ankle-length inseams.

Old Navy recently launched this broad range of colored denim, which includes pants, jackets and shorts, marking the end of dark holiday wear and inciting excitement for summer. The brand’s Neo Nautical Spring features a mariner theme that’s seen in stripes, prints, colors and details that scream “Vacation.” Lightweight jackets, maxi dresses, paisleys and florals are summer’s returning favorites. But also notable: eyelets are back, whether you like them or not.

For the guys, fleece hoodies and Flex-Max denim in soft neutrals are versatile wardrobe staples. Five-pocket pants deliver an unbeatable hand feel, plus Built-In Flex, which means they’re ultra-stretchy so guys can move in the skinniest of skinnies. Some pairs also introduce Built-In Flex Max: double the stretch technology for the ultimate in comfort.

Would you wear colored jeans? I just got a pink pair to test my limits. On a Wednesday, perhaps.
