Up in Smoke

MANILA, Philippines – Smoky lids proved to be a favorite at this season’s couture shows, with fashion houses such as Alexandre Vauthier and Jean Paul Gaultier utilizing the smoldering style. But Atelier Versace’s smoky take on the cat-eye flick was the clear crowd pleaser, whose greasy metallic finish contrasted nicely against the models’ satin nude lips, upping the sex appeal.

Blanc Brows

Straight, arched, thick, thin, bushy, sparse—nowadays, there’s a bevy of eyebrow styles (not to mention a wealth of cosmetics) to choose from. But leave it to Schiaparelli to offer another, more outlandish option: painted white. Drawn on an otherwise pretty (read: rosy flushed cheeks, and nude puckers) visage, it’s no surprise that the thick, chalky style raised a few brows.

On a Roll

Hairstylist Sam McKnight called it the “croissant” but Chanel’s couture locks definitely didn’t come from an easy-bake. It took McKnight’s team three days to create 80 croissant shapes from wired foam covered in human hair, before a two-day fitting with Lagerfeld’s 65 models. The real twist? The exaggerated bun actually took inspiration from a 1932 Picasso sculpture, not the French pastry.

Attention Seeker

At Maison Margiela, glam rock beauty topped the charts as makeup artist Pat McGrath created rollicking one-of-a-kind looks for each of Galliano’s muses. To demonstrate: pouts were coated in purple glitter, vivid lip prints were stamped on faces and, as a tribute to the late David Bowie, a ginger-haired model’s right eye was dusted with tiny, metallic stars.

Mane Addition

While punk princess tiaras were the topper of choice at Saint Laurent’s spring collection, Couture Fashion Week’s crowns took on a more creative spin. Gilded serpentine headpieces custom-made by Harumi Klossowski crowned plaited waves at Valentino, pearl-encrusted headbands shone prettily at Elie Saab and sleek silver laurels rested on super straight locks at Zuhair Murad.
