Hola, Chica

Francine Gacrama - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Here at YStyle, we’re always keeping an eye out for the emerging trends straight from the runway and this week’s look is from one of the great American storytellers of New York fashion — Michael Kors.

If his cleaned-up collection is any indication, the somewhat airy but polished look has become one of the highlights this season. Inspired by a medley of women like “Mother of American Modernism” Georgia O’Keeffe and jewelry designer Elsa Peretti, the collection’s feminine pieces were the ones that stole the show. 3-D petals were embroidered on coats and dresses while 2-D flowers were printed on fabrics such as georgette and silk chiffon. On the other end of the spectrum, the collection presented androgynous pieces that reflect Peretti’s style. Considered one of his strongest looks, Kors is definitely on the right path and is on a roll with his most recent collections.

This week’s look of the week is a crimson washed-faille dress with a plunging neckline that will have you feeling confident on and off the runway. An ode to each and every woman’s inner Latina, this look will bring out the fiery femme fatale in you.

MUSE: María Félix

Zero in on our YStyle woman’s muse, María Félix, for her sex appeal as one of the most beautiful faces in the history of Mexican cinema.

Known for her fiery personality and extraordinary looks, it was her involvement in the film Doña Bárbara that established her stardom, so much so that from then on she was known as “La Doña.” For three decades she ruled the box office and even won three Ariel Awards for three films. Felix was even painted by famous artists, including Jean Cocteau and Diego Rivera. Her beauty and talent inspired writers Octavio Paz and Carlos Fuentes.

An iconic beauty on- and off-screen, María Félix forever changed the world of Mexican cinema. Ladies, take note.

HAIR: Diane von Furstenberg spring 2016

Texture’s the name of the game so take your locks to higher heights with a look from DVF.

Inspired by Von Furstenberg’s younger years, the look centers on her Studio 54 days where it was all about being carefree and sporting disco curls. Hairstylist Orlando Pita channels a younger Diane by prepping each girl’s natural hair with gel.  He then curls their hair with a 3/4-inch curling iron and pins them in place to set. Before the girls are sent down the runway, he brushes out the ringlets to fuzzy perfection.

ACCOMMODATION: Coqui Coqui Tulum Residence & Spa

Inspired by the white sand beach of Tulum, Coqui Coqui is a boutique design hotel that will keep you from wanting to touch base with reality — forever.

Guests can expect nothing but superb hospitality while being surrounded by the peninsula’s lush nature. An eco-friendly boutique hotel, Coqui Coqui was constructed out of repurposed, local materials and is powered by solar energy.

Be treated to a different kind of spa treatment that’s based on the hotel’s own Coqui Coqui scents. Although the spa menus vary by location, each treatment is accompanied by a signature scent depending on where you’ve checked in.

MUSIC: Devendra Banhart

A favorite in our YStyle woman’s playlist, Devendra Banhart is a Venezuelan American singer/songwriter whose acid-folk style and dreamlike songwriting will leave you listening to every single record. As a visual artist, Banhart started experimenting with all kinds of art during his stint at the San Francisco Art Institute. Some of his work was featured in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as well as the Art Basel Contemporary Art Fair in Florida. It was also during this time that he began recording songs that led him to travel from the Bay Area to Paris, and soon performing on a regular basis. His influences include Vashti Bunyan, Caetano Veloso and Arthur Russell.

MUSEUM: Frida Kahlo Museum

Also known as The Blue House, the historic house museum is dedicated to the life and work of one of Mexico’s greatest artists, Frida Kahlo.

Known throughout the world, Kahlo is famous for her paintings that celebrate indigenous and national tradition, mixed with surreal, personal motifs. Her more famous pieces are self-portraits that symbolize her own pain and sexuality. The cobalt blue museum was the family home of Frida and has since been converted into a gallery that’s geared toward showcasing and commemorating her life. This was the same home where communist Leon Trotsky and his wife took refuge after they were exiled from the Soviet Union.

Kahlo’s collection includes personal art pieces, cookware, linens and personal souvenirs such as photographs and letters. A private museum, this gallery is a must for any Frida or art lover.
