COMPILED - Cai Subijano - The Philippine Star

Miss bossy pants

MANILA, Philippines - The cover for Nasty Gal’s Sophia Amoruso’s new book #GirlBoss: How to Write Your Own Rules While Turning Heads and Turning Profits was revealed just this week with Sophia looking super hot. And rich. In it, she shares her completely unconventional rise to the top of the e-commerce and fashion industries, including how her business started by rummaging through the Salvation Army, haggling for $5 sweaters, then selling them for huge mark-ups. “Germaphobes, beware: I got to be a success by touching every single thing in the thrift store. I paid $8 for one of those Chanel jackets, and sold it for $1,000,” she writes. The gist of the book, basically is “How you can hack it in life and still make it,” Sophia tells WWD. Whatever she’s doing, it’s working. Last year, Nasty Gal brought in nearly $130 million in sales and Sophia managed to procure a $50 million investment from Index Ventures to expand the business back in 2012. However, we should take whatever Sophia writes with a grain of salt: in the early days of Nasty Gal, she used friend-adding bots on Myspace to market the brand and today, Nasty Gal has been accused several times of knocking off independent designers, most notably by acclaimed accessories designer Sophia Webster. #GirlBoss will be officially released on May 6.

Wonder girl

Emma Watson — she’s just like us! At least temporarily for us editors, anyway. This week, Wonderland magazine launched double covers for February/March featuring the former Miss Granger and revealed that she also helped guest-edit a section of the issue. That she actually found time to do this in addition to finishing up her studies at Brown University, along with promoting her new film Noah alongside Russell Crowe, kind of makes us want to give up on life altogether, except for the fact that it wasn’t easy for her at all. “Being an editor... Not totally easy eh? @wonderlandmag” she tweeted last Jan. 23, followed by “Computer just crashed. Pain au chocolat anyone? @wonderlandmag @lukejwindsor,” which was posted last Jan. 27. She also came up with her own descriptions for her two covers: “Afro Prada Bruiser,” which shows her looking sullen in an elaborate updo and “Elf Alien Queen,” where she smoulders in a tiara with her hair all over the place, but in a sexy way. According to sources, other celebrities featured in the mag include Pharrell, Lena Dunham, Lorde and Emma’s Perks of Being a Wallflower co-star Ezra Miller. The issue will launch on Feb. 7, just in time for #NYFW.
