How to your wear your makeup in a Joey Samson ensemble

Cai Subijano - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - For Joey Samson’s masterful gala show at the YStyle anniversary party last week, he wanted a clean, fresh look and a pompadour top with a low textured ponytail to go with his streamlined, neutral-toned collection. While the makeup may be a little too pale for real life, with the right contouring and a subtle pop of color on the lips, it can be wearable — elegant, even, especially when you pair it with slicked-back updo. Here, Shu Uemura makeup artist Claire Seelin-Diokno and L’Oreal Professionnel hair stylist Borge Aloba show you how to cop the look.

Oh, make me over

The inspiration: For the makeup, Joey Samson was inspired by the Leonardo da Vinci painting, “Lady with an Ermine.” According to the show’s stylist, Noel Manapat, “Joey’s collection is about softness born out of the severity of tailoring. Therefore, the makeup had to echo easy glamour. It had to look simple and natural with notes of soft tans, caramels and blush to complement the neutral collection, yet had the bleed of orange lurking at the inner lips to add a modern edge.”

Step 1: Moisturize the skin. You’ll need it to glow from the inside and eliminate any rough spots. The Shu Uemura UV Under Base Mousse is a weightless mousse makeup base that helps to even out the skintone and texture, reduce redness and minimize the appearance of pores. Use before makeup application to prepare the face for flawless makeup. This base is 20 times lighter in weight compared to liquid or cream type makeup bases and covers skin imperfections to create a smooth and even skin surface.

Step 2:  Apply liquid foundation sparingly to cover imperfections and conceal blemishes. The new Shu Uemura Fall 2013 The Light Bulb Foundation, which just came out this month, comes in nine shades and will be accompanied by a hand-crafted double-ended sponge for dual application: the bigger end can be used for tapping your foundation all over your face, while the smaller end is for applying foundation on areas that are harder to reach.

Step 3: Add a creamy, shimmery pearl highlighter on the apples of the cheeks to catch the light. The light yellow shade from the Shu Uemura Blossom Dream collection is a warm yellow highlighter that can be used for recreating that “lit from within” look.

Step 4: Set with loose powder. Shu Uemura has a face powder that creates  a soft matte finish with long-lasting effects. This super fine, lightweight powder is comfortable on skin, without drying and is packaged with a specific puff designed for the finish. However, if you’re more comfortable setting your makeup with a brush, that works too.

Step 5: Contour temples and cheekbones with the Shu Uemura Warm Sun Bronzing Powder, a finely milled powder in a beautiful golden shimmering-bronze shade for the face. The bronzer will warm this look up, so you don’t end up looking like a Tim Burton bride.

Step 6:  Pair with a strong but well-blended brow. Although admittedly high-maintenance because you need to use a cutter to sharpen it, Shu Uemura’s eyebrow pencil is great for creating a natural finish and shape because it only releases color pigment when it interacts with the oils in the brow hairs. The result is natural, defined brows that are smudge-proof and long-lasting.

Step 7: Dot a matte orange lipstick in the center of the lip and blend lightly outwards. Try staining your lips with the bright orange shade from the Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Blossom Dream collection, which is an unusual subdued tangerine orange to add a little more life to your face.
