Modernizing the terno

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Inspired by its commitment to use fashion and indigenous crafts as a tool for nation building, the Fashion & Design Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is pleased to share that preparations are underway for the third Philippine Fashion Design Competition (PFDC). This year’s theme is â€œToday’s Terno,” which was created with the purpose of reimagining Filipino design aesthetics.

PFDC 2013 will also be a Social Design Competition like its predecessor, linking finalists with local craftsmen to revitalize interest in Filipino made materials and to support the local economy. Partnerships between designer finalists and the local craftsmen and their communities are envisioned to be a sustainable endeavor that can continue beyond the competition. Indigenous materials must be used in all entries and may be blended with other materials, as long as the indigenous material makes up at least 60% of the garment.

As in all editions of the PFDC, all designer finalists will receive invaluable education from mentoring sessions with the members of the Fashion & Design Council of the Philippines. PFDC 2013 will be remembered for its impact on design, industry and education. The grand prize winner will receive mentoring and seed money to kick-start his design business.

The competition is open to all budding designers, 16 years old and above who have not been in the business for more than three years. Deadline of all entries: Sept. 14, 2013, with the Grand Finals slated for November 2013.
