The things I never needed

Chonx Tibajia - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Since the beginning of time, women have been wearing makeup. The ancient Egyptians used kohl and malachite for the eyes, henna for the hair, and moringa and castor oils for the skin to enhance their beauty. Makeup-wise, things were much simpler in Cleopatra’s time. Today, the average woman lugs around at least three types of lip product, one eye makeup palette, eyeliner, blush, powder compact and foundation every day –– I made this up, but it’s probably true. Extreme cases like myself throw in eye makeup base, primer, a special liner for the brows and something that sparkles, just in case. I never wear them, but they are always in my bag, weighing me down, reminding me of yet another thing I have failed to do this past year: use all the makeup I buy. I know, New Year’s resolutions are so 2003, but this one is important. I resolve to buy only what I need, when it comes to beauty products, at least. From one junkie to another, here are the edited contents of my vanity kit, which finally rid of all the things bought, kept and loved but never really needed.

Sampar Stylo Absolu Pureté Prodigal Pen

Great things come in small in packages, it’s true. This roller pen packed with light essential oils has earned its place in my bag. Is an insidious bump threatening to ruin a big night? Roll it over the would-be pimple and the bump disappears within a couple of hours. It also soothes insect bites and razor burn.

Kiehl’s Lip Balm SPF 15 Hue No. 30G

An all-weather lip balm that relieves cracked lips and protects them from the UVA and UVB rays, as well as the cold, this one makes a great travel buddy. It also doesn’t cause pimples so you can wear it overnight.

The Body Shop Lip & Cheek Stain

The trouble with having oily skin is not being able to retain color — well, among other things like having a shiny face, constantly battling blemishes and having to be picky with skin care. I found that a stain is best for this skin type over creams, powders and mousse formulas. It stays put, especially if you apply it before you put on powder and looks great even on a bare face –– great for quick touch-ups.

K-Palette Lasting 2-Way Eyebrow Liquid and Powder

Women who are eyebrows-obsessed will like this one –– on one end, it’s a liquid brush liner that leaves translucent, hair-like strokes for filling in sparse brows, and the other end is a powder with a sponge-tip applicator for definition. It will take about five minutes of your time –– max, but it’ll be worth it.

Shiseido Translucent Pressed Powder

I hate how face powder can make even the most sophisticated woman look cheap and amateurish. This one is translucent so it matches all skin tones and doesn’t leave a powdery finish on your face. It’s goes on evenly and minimizes the appearance of lines, pores and shine.

MAC Select Moisturecover Concealer in NW35

I never use concealer because I could never blend it properly or find the perfect shade. It’s made especially for undereye coverage and delicate skin, so it glides on smoothly and doesn’t require a lot of blending. You can layer it on for added coverage or apply lightly for a translucent, natural finish. It comes in 14 shades. Still, the best way to find the best shade is to try it on your face –– not on the back of your hand or your wrist. You are not the same shade all over.
