A cover girl is born
MANILA, Philippines - After looking pretty in Prada at this year’s Emmys, it was only a matter of time before Lena Dunham would land a magazine cover — which she totally did. Online retailer Asos made Lena the cover of their November 2012 issue, which launched on Oct. 1 (the fashion media cycle has its own calendar), and their Fashion Up app. This comes with the news that Lena’s lit agents are shopping her first book, entitled Not That Kind Of Girl: Advice By Lena Dunham, for a million dollars. “So many amazing things have happened in this past year, it was almost like amazing things overload…” says the Girls creator of her recent string of successes. Shucks. Utter humility always makes it easier for us to be genuinely happy for someone else.
Death by Kanye
Kanye West revived his collaboration with luxury shoe brand Guiseppe Zanotti, which resulted in a pure white heel inspired by the cover for his “Cruel Summer” collaborative album. While we have to admit that the heels are beautifully designed with a Grecian-style leaf motif, considering that his last collab with Zanotti cost $5,800, we’re not sure we’re getting our hands on these. We’ll try not to look when Kanye takes a photo of Kim prancing around in them and posts it on Instagram. Ugh.
War on Cathy
New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn sure is an unpopular figure in Fashionlandia these days. Earlier this week, Hedi Slimane banned Horyn from the Saint Laurent fashion show and then posted a three-paragraph-long diatribe against her via Twitter, saying “Miss Horyn is a schoolyard bully and also a little bit of a stand-up comedian.” Then, Lady Gaga dropped her first single Cake during the Mugler spring 2013 show where she rapped, “Nicopanda got style, trick. Cathy Horyn your style ain’t dick.” Ouch. You might recall that the pop star first began feuding with the writer a few weeks ago when Horyn found herself falling out of veteran couturier Oscar de la Renta's favor after she likened the designer to a “hotdog” — as in someone who shows off his tricks — a well-meaning comment that de la Renta mistook as an insult. The designer responded by publishing a full-page open letter to to Horyn in Women’s Wear Daily where he called the critic “a stale 3-day-old hamburger.” Then Lady Gaga took sides in the matter, tweeting “@OscarPRGirl Bravo Oscar. Only you would be so chic as to purchase an entire page in WWD, making statements like a good fashion citizen.” We don’t know where all this hate is coming from, but once Miss Horyn decides to lash back, it’ll be war.
Fashion disappearing act
So apparently these things do happen in real life, and not just in a designer’s worst nightmares. Designer label Hakaan had to cancel their show slated last Oct. 2 for Paris Fashion Week, owing to the fact that the couriers lost their entire collection. We don’t really know how this was possible (Was it theft? Sabotage? Pure carelessness?), especially since we live in a time where the methods for tracking packages have gotten a lot more sophisticated. The PR team behind Hakaan has announced that the label decided to bite the bullet and recreate the collection to show at a later date.
The world of Karl
Those heading to Paris next year might want to add one more stop to their travel itineraries: Karl Lagerfeld is opening up his own monochrome concept boutique. To be located on the Left Bank of Paris, the 2,150-square-foot, two-level shop will showcase Karl’s menswear line Lagerfeld, his newly-launched luxury line Karl Lagerfeld Paris, and his relatively more affordable diffusion line, Karl. Karl’s photographs, design books, watches and sunglasses will also be available for purchase.
