A student with her own apparel line
Betina Ocampo just found a way to make a basic into a must-have — all while she’s still a soon-to-graduate student of the design and management program at Parsons New School for Design.
Although she was educated abroad most of her life, she still has her fingers upon her roots. Betina hopes to continue preserving artisinal traditions in the form of contemporary T-shirts. Her worldliness is seen in her creations. Her very first spring/summer ‘13 collection was born and made in her native country, the Philippines, and will follow her around travels in Southeast Asia. Each season will represent a specific country’s rich cultural identity based on the specialized indigenous textiles, materials, craft and techniques of various artisan communities.
The shirt designs convey a nostalgic feel, both from the east and the west. This combination makes it modern, as our world gets smaller and smaller through globalization. Betina T-shirts serve as a reminder that our artisanal culture is not forgotten and can even have a futuristic touch. The line is a child of both retrospective and progressive thinking. Its beauty and spontaneity give off a fun and fresh vibe while observing the strict rules of traditional beading and craftsmanship.
Betina is just about to launch her tees worldwide and here’s a preview of her collection.
