Fashion lends a hand

- Cai Subijano - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The country is in a state of calamity in the wake of recent floods caused by monsoon rains, and the local fashion collective has heeded this cry for help. Here are a number of ways you can contribute to the relief efforts for the benefit of flood victims, while keeping the local fashion industry alive. It’s almost like supporting two causes with just one swipe of your credit card.

Designing for a cause

Accessory designer Nicole Whisenhunt will be donating a portion of the proceeds to The Philippine Red Cross Foundation from her fall/winter collection, which will be unveiled and available for purchase today at the Cura V boutique in Power Plant mall. Cocktails will be served from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

From Tokyo to Manila

Exactly one week ago, Japanese retailer Uniqlo announced on uniqlo.com.ph that it would donate 3 million yen (or P1.5 million) to aid the flood victims in Metro Manila. The donation will be made through the SM Foundation, the socio-civic arm of the SM Group of Companies. According to Katsumi Kubota, COO of Fast Retailing Philippines, Inc., “Uniqlo is saddened by the current natural occurrences in the Philippines and we would like to express our deep sympathy to all the Filipinos who were affected by this calamity. We stand together with our Filipino friends in providing a helping hand.”

Give your own way

Adora department store announced that it will donate 100 percent of sales for selected Stella Luna shoes to Gawad Kalinga Walang Iwanan Relief Operations for the next two weeks. In addition to this, they encourage shoppers to trade in their old jeans in exchange for a 15-percent discount voucher. All pairs will be also be donated to the Gawad Kalinga Walang Iwanan Relief Operations from now until Oct. 11.

Walking for charity

Bianca Prieto Santos has organized Operation: Monsoon Relief, a fashion show fundraiser for the benefit of The Philippine Red Cross that will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Tents at Southgate Mall, 6/F, Alphaland. Participating designers include Envoy by Edmir lagui, Eric delos Santos, Jay Sustiguer, John Paras, Bespoke by Levenson Rodriguez, Linya Disenyo, Orlie Jane Morgan, Pia Gladys Perey, Ulysees King, and Veejay Floresca. The show will be directed by Levenson Rodriguez, hosted by Tessa Prieto-Valdes, and sponsored by Alphaland, Cravings, Exile Lights & Audio, St. Nicholas Catering, Eventshaker Mobile Bar, and Full Circle.

Relief therapy

Last Wednesday, online retailer Zalora held a fundraising event at the Skye Lounge in Bonifacio Global City where participants showed their support by contributing P250 at the door. Those who weren’t able to make it could also opt to donate denominations of P250, P500, and P1,000 via their Zalora shopping cart. They will also launch KC Concepcion’s Closet, a collection of items from the actress’ wardrobe that will be sold on the site. One hundred percent of all generation from the collection will be donated to the United Nations World Food Program.
