Searching for the contemporary bridal gown

- Bea J. Ledesma -

MANILA, Philippines - What makes a modern bride? YStyle asked four leading designers to design a gown for today’s modern bride. The results: flowing gowns to sharp suits, proving that modern is what you make it.

Dennis Lustico

The bridal outfit: The gown is made of cotton-silk Spanish lace with cut-on-bias shirred tulle overlay. It is accented with thin “nyloned” ash gray silk chiffon.

?On determining what makes a dress modern: What makes it modern perhaps the silhouette. Its direction is towards simplicity, understatement and a minimum of embellishment.?

Ivar the great: Ivar Aseron has mastered the simple modern gown. together.

Defining the modern bride: A modern bride expresses her uniqueness. She makes it a point that her wedding is a manifestation of her personality.?

The perfect modern bride: An example — a perfect one actually — was Caroline Bessette Kennedy. Everything about her wedding was unexpected and yet perfect.?

On modernizing the occasion: Perhaps brides should never forget the element of “fun” in their wedding. One way to achieve this is to think of not-so-stiff themes. As for the wedding gown, she should, at all times, stick to what she likes and what flatters her, rather than torturing herself with what people expect her to wear.

Now showing: "Wear something relevant to the times," says Maureen Disini.

Ivar Aseron

The modern bride’s modern dress: The A-line gown is made of mikado silk and tulle. The gown was cut along classic lines, what makes it modern are the details like the upper half of the dress features an opaque front and a sheer back even for the sleeves. Another detail is the extended front panel of the bodice which forms part of the neckline.

On defending tradition: The modern bride does not really turn her back on tradition. What she does is take tradition and give it a modern twist.

Maureen Disini

The modern gown is wrinkle-free and easy to pack: True to my signature style, I focused on draping and played with key fabrics in mesh and crepe jersey. What makes this gown truly modern is the way it has been constructed; foregoing zippers, corsets and petticoats. The gown is extremely light and easy to pack.

Defining the modern bride: One who stays away from cookie-cutter weddings and is open to exploring other possibilities.

On being friends with a modern bride: A best example of a modern bride would be Tanya Escaler Rivierre. She kept her wedding very small and intimate, bought her dress off the rack and even did her own hair and makeup. But she looked amazing nonetheless!

Changing the tone of the occasion: Use your own creativity. Wear something relevant to the times. Why not change your makeup or hairstyle? Or make your own bouquet of flowers. Whatever it is that you do, modern weddings can also be equally as fun as traditional ones.

The out-of-the-box bride: For the bride who wants to push the envelope more, a not-so-popular choice would be to wear a suit.

Finding the right fabric: I used light weight wool in ivory with a bit of silk tulle and lace on the bodice.

Defining the modern bride: She’s someone who is very open minded.

The modern mantra: Don’t be afraid to be different or experimental.
