Get chummy with our new star athletes

MANILA, Philippines - It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if they start endorsing everything from underwear to condiments to health supplements to laundry detergent. After winning five gold medals and two silvers in the 10th International Dragon Boat Federation World Championships in Tampa Bay, Florida, with nary a showing of support from the Philippine government — whether financial or emotional — going into the competition, nothing should be surprising anymore about the capabilities of the Philippine Dragon Boat team, also known as the “Dragon Warriors”

As news coverage showed, however, if support wasn’t coming from the government, then it would come elsewhere. In Tampa Bay, it came from resident Filipinos who cheered on the Dragon Warriors in every event that they competed in and brought food and drinks for the champion athletes.

Here in Manila, a show of support comes by way of “One Movement, One Direction, a dinner for the benefit of the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation. To be held at the Oceana restaurant at the SM Mall of Asia on Thursday, Aug. 25, this benefit event will feature a sit-down dinner by the bay, live entertainment, an auction and a chance to meet another group of athletes championing the skill and determination of Filipinos.
