Art and soul
MANILA, Philippines - For this month’s edition of the YStyle logo, we turned to artist Geraldine Madriaga-Mapa, known for her style of mixing raw and vintage elements. Her last exhibit, an homage to the hand-written note, was made up of letters people wrote but never sent, painstakingly handsewn into fabric to mimic the author’s handwriting.
Her aesthetic is a sweet mishmash of homespun and old-fashioned touches. “Like mixing old photographs and geometric elements for a contrast that juxtaposes nostalgic yet fresh designs,” she says. “My choice of colors tends to be desaturated pale hues that complement a vintage feel.”
Which makes her the perfect artist for February.
Famously known as Heart Month, February’s long been acknowledged as the season for all things saccharine and sweet. Geraldine tackled the themes of love — or, as she puts it, “flowers, hearts and all things in between and about love” — in this month’s logo. “The design is basically a collection of elements mostly associated with love, put together like a collage of photos and doodles in one’s personal journal entry.”
Geraldine’s work is on display at the “Meiday: Poster by 27 Artists” exhibit at Cubao X today.
