Cebu's finest
MANILA, Philippines - “The image that comes to mind when you say Cebu designers is evening wear,” says Preview chief Pauline Juan. “I think they own that category. They do the most intricate, elaborate, romantic and feminine evening gowns.”
Here are some of Cebu’s most touted style setters:
Monique Lhuillier
Every Hollywood star making her trip down the aisle, it seems, is clad in Monique Lhuillier. Known for her romantic, ultra-feminine creations, Lhuillier is probably Cebu’s most popular import.
Arcy Gayatin
Known for her unconventional use of material and unusual technique with fabric, Arcy Gayatin is not one to hog the spotlight, which makes her one of the more respectable designers not only in Cebu but in the whole Philippine fashion industry.
Furne One
Fresh from a gala show at the Shangri-La Makati and a showing at London Fashion Week, Dubai-based designer Furne One is applauded for his astounding embellishment and impressive silhouettes. Every collection he creates deserves a gallery showing.
Jun Escario
The go-to guy for red-carpet worthy frocks, Jun Escario seems to have dressed half of Cebu society — and Manila’s as well — for the Preview party. His style is favored by the Swarovski-loving, cleavage-baring, goddess-channeling set.
Cary Santiago
Architectural structures and laser-cut techniques have made Cary Santiago a name and talent to behold both here and in Dubai. A recent bridal show proved that bridal gowns can go beyond the cookie-cutter strapless dresses and halter gowns.
