Fashion in your palm
With an iPad there is no such thing as a strange bedfellow. Every night I sleep clutching this little wonder. Mac expert and steak king Elbert Cuenca couldn’t have described it better: “The iPad can be anything you want it to be.”
It can be a smaller writing instrument, a mobile contraption to ferry around presentations, a notebook-sized Internet surfing device, a toy, and a reading tool.
The iTunes App store is almost perverted with its vast range of choices. Both the iPhone and the iPad have already changed lives. No kidding. I count my calories with it, budget my entire household and hypnotize myself with it. Yes, there are a couple of apps dedicated to hypnotizing oneself into serenity or towards wealth. I have all those apps. Good luck to me.
Of course you can’t deny checking out the juicy fashion apps that go by the hundreds. The fashion apps are a mess of pretenders, posers and shams. Hmmm, sounds familiar? However, some actually deliver and when they do it’s more than just a download. It’s an app angel. It is the app equivalent of a Vince Uy (creative director of Preview magazine). They, for the fashion ilk at least, make fashion more than up to the minute: they make it theirs. Most are even free! So here after hours of exhaustive searching and research, I’ve cleaned out the app weeds and present to you my top fashion app picks. These are great if you’re just starting out your fashion app collection and want to slowly build it with more quirky apps. An app a day keeps the doctor away!
Elle Shopping Guide

This free app allows you to find the best stores when you are abroad. It’s a great app to gift to someone who just moved to a new city in the US.

Chic feed
Free
A great app to use for styling inspiration, it features photos from awesome fashion blogs. It has an easy scroll format that shows beautiful fashion pegs. It’s a perfect accompanying app for the Moodboard app ($8.99…but so worth it) to create an instant fashion board for your next shoot or just an outfit for the night. The Moodboard cuts and crops directly from the web and creates color palettes making words seem superfluous.
Net-a-porter
Free
A delicious-looking catalogue cleverly disguised as a magazine. The girly dream of touching a drool-worthy shoe and getting it right then and there becomes true with the easy-to-buy touch interface. Touch an outfit or accessory and a box pops up asking your size and color preference and adding the goods to your shopping cart. It makes me want to cry. There’s news that a local favorite fashion site will be doing this soon. For now enjoy the joys of shopping in Net-A-Porter.
Style.com
Free
The seasonal fashion encyclopedia is in the palm of your hand. Easy to use and free, it’s impossible to say no. A great app to use when you’re on your way to the mall!
Gilt Group
Free
A free app that is teeming with good fashion deals every day. The easy-to-use interface is totally addicting. Don’t wait around, log in as soon as you get updates, the last Missoni sale was outrageous and lasted only for two hours.
Trend tracker
Free
Find out the latest news in the fashion world, think hot collaborations happening only in Tokyo for luxury brands to cool new products or ad campaigns. This makes fashion, well, cool again. A well-edited designer look book is also a great Cliff notes on every seasonal collection.
Vogue Stylist
Free
This awesome app (better for iPhone users) allows you to add a big now to your own wardrobe by taking photos of actual pieces in your closet. You can then add the latest trend according to Vogue and update any outfit you have. Fashion porn to the highest level…interactive gratification.
Sartorialist
Free
The app itself is not created by Scott Schuman, but by a fan of his. It’s a compilation of his work from all over the globe. It’s a great photo essay on how down-to-earth style can be so celestial.
