Trend watch:What's next? Long and lean

JACKIE O' FLASH - Bea J. Ledesma -

Changes are a-comin’. For fall, designers have completely revamped the silhouette, slimming it down to a simple column, dropping the hem and taking off the extraneous flounces and frills and embracing the minimalist movement. Phoebe Philo, considered the leader of minimalists, forged the path with the streamlined looks under French house Celine. Another camp, led by the likes of Moschino, resuscitated the maximalist tendance — offering fringed lamé dresses and studded leather jackets.

Velvet evolver

It’s a slippery slope when it comes to wearing velvet. Formerly synonymous with your grandmother’s upholstery and ’90s fabric of choice (paired with a choker, natch), designers are updating the once-dubious material in new and not-meant-for-tacky-furniture ways.

Tailored menswear

Expect Diane Keaton to zip her way up the style icon ladder once again as menswear-inspired looks gain popularity. Zac Posen and Elie Tahari give it a zippy ’70s twist, while Alexander Wang takes it on through the prism of the ’90s.

Rock ’n’ roll

Eighties maximalism with some grunge thrown in and you have some of the most striking looks to emerge from the season. Bearing a heavy debt to eyeliner-wearing rockstars in hair bands (no, we’re not talking about Adam Lambert but we can see him in this, too), it’s all about studded, zipped leather with a side of bondage gear.

High-voltage shine

Whether it’s in the form of iridescent fabrics, metallic appliqués or sequined embellishment, shiny fabric’s making a comeback. Several designers made a case for the lustrous, glossy polish, some — like Moschino did with an otherworldly fringe dress in Vegas gold — more exuberantly than others.

Longer skirts

With hemlines dropping from mid-calf downwards, the sleek column silhouette is turning out to be a popular look favored by models when off-duty. Paired with platforms or boots, it’s an approach that’s somehow reminiscent of ’90s Calvin Klein aesthetic.

Minimalism

The crisp cut of jackets and suits, clean lines and simple silhouettes celebrate minimalism at its best. The Olsen twins reveled in the look, slipping in bits of paneled leather over spare cuts, giving their label The Row a kind of rockstar appeal.
