The pinup

JACKIE O' FLASH - Bea J. Ledesma -

When journeying through the dusty terrains of, like, the Sahara, it makes sense to invest in staples best loved by constant travelers: khaki coats and no-nonsense separates that retain some semblance of its origins after days of wandering through hot, sandy plains.

But if you’re looking beyond theme parks and their ilk for your travel plans, insist on some fantasy. Travel is rarely luxurious — particularly if you’re a plebe like me who travels coach and pinches pennies when it comes to excess baggage. But that doesn’t mean sightseeing can’t be fun.

For the travel issue, YStyle re-imagines the pinup, which got plenty of play on the runways with kitschy prints and playful, body-friendly silhouettes. Desiring a look that’s more va-va-voom vacationer than fanny packs and stretch denim, we turned to designer Eric delos Santos, who envisioned a merry, mischief-making tourist that had hints of Doris Day, Betty Boop and just a little Brigitte Bardot. Whether she’s hitting the beach in a vintage-style suit or chomping down on a club sandwich in a flirty skirt and halter top (as every girl is bound to do on vacation at some point), she never surrenders to the requisite T-shirt and jeans but romps in a corset and cropped shorts because she’s a globe-trotter, not a backpacker — even if she is flying coach.
