Let's get this party started

Style is a simple way of saying complicated things, according to Jean Cocteau. If that’s the case, these party dresses are saying, “Them chickens jackin’ my style. I’m so 2008, you so 2000 and late.”

Oh, wait; Fergie said that.

Well, whatever. These days, the little black dress doesn’t always cut it during party season. And since it’s November — today’s my birthday, holla! — expect the invites to start coming fast and heavy, unless, that is, you’re my cousin with a public nose-picking habit. (Seriously, Andrew, you need to quit that.)

For holiday, work in some fun adornment and some cheery fall colors. Forget drab and dreary hues. (You can always wear them to the next credit card intervention you’re invited to.)

This is the time to kick up those heels and go for winsome embellishment. Joel Escober’s zipper rosettes, whether draped across the bodice with tulle trim over an A-line mini dress or prettily embroidering the collar and sleeves of a pared-down shift, make for a memorable dress. Meanwhile Chris Diaz’s spunky, sassy numbers in bright jewel tones paired with gold sequins look like your mom’s disco dress made babies with your Teen Vogue cover. That’s a really complicated way of saying: they’re super cute.

Don’t be so serious when dressing up. The key to making a splashy entrance isn’t a classy, sedate LBD. Save those for court dates and job interviews. It’s about a dress that makes you feel like it’s your birthday and the world is your sure-to-be-shucked oyster.

If that doesn’t work, throw on a hat and tell the bartender it’s your birthday. You get a free song and dance number and they usually throw a free drink or cupcake your way.
