Jump street
The onesie, otherwise known as the jumpsuit (long version), romper or playsuit (short version), has earned its place in the wardrobe closet, becoming a recurring player in seasonal collections.
Easy-to-wear and eye-catching, it’s the busy chick’s equivalent of the wrap dress. On the minus side, it makes peeing marginally more troublesome, forcing you to unbutton (in some cases) and peel off the suit before you can get down to business.
The jumpsuit has retained its popularity over the past year, moving past its original role as novelty garment to staple. Take, for example, its perennial presence at designer shows, appearing in standout resort collections. 3.1 Philip Lim and Celine (under the auspices of former Chloé savant Phoebe Phylo) have all stayed true to the romper, offering it in khaki, linen and, most notably, black lace, as seen in Stella McCartney’s seminal version, a recreation of her ensemble at the Met Gala. Meanwhile, Alexander Wang graduated to the playsuit’s cousin, chambray overalls (a reaction, he claims, to his collaboration with Gap which debuted this week).
Despite its quirky, offbeat appeal, it looks like the jumper is here to stay. Just remember to stave off the liquids while wearing one. I hear bathroom time can get tricky.
