There’s a shutterbug in all of us. We love taking photos with whoever we meet, wherever we are. Five hobbyists share with us their experience taking snapshots with the Samsung Pixon during the mobile phone’s launch – catwalk stunner Jo Ann Bitagcol, TV host Daphne Oseña-Paez, famed photographer Johann Espiritu, business tycoon Mike Huang, and retail maverick Bryan Lim.
Jo Ann Bitagcol: I think photography is a quiet way of expression. My favorite subjects are people and still life. It’s a good thing that mobile phones now have a camera, I don’t need to carry another gadget to do the job. I always consider the phone’s camera resolution before buying a new phone. My experience with the Samsung Pixon phone was impressive. It delivered what I wanted in a camera phone. I used the black and white feature the most because it’s nice to have a nostalgic feel in the photos.
Johann Espiritu: I’m a visual person, and I’m captivated by contemporary visual art. My background in art is in painting, specifically watercolor. About 13 years ago, I was looking for a new medium to work with, and I came across the work of Irving Penn. That experience made me realize the potential of photography as a means of artistic expression. I’ve been working with photographs ever since. You’re never without a camera when you have an excellent camera phone, so you’re always ready to be a photographer. Aside from the many functions that my phone has, I want it to have a function where I’ll be able to load film into it. The subjects that fascinate me are still life reportage — found objects, textures, and forms. When I took my photos during the Pixon event, I shot almost exclusively in black and white. Those are the colors of my photography. My experience with the Samsung Pixon phone is amusing!
Daphne Oseña-Paez: I have this habit of taking pictures every day — of anything I see, any topic, and any genre. No drama, no major photojournalistic statements, no landscapes. Just details of little things I see. I carry a compact camera with me every day. When I became a mother, my favorite subject became my children, Sophia and Lily. I would document their every move. I have an active Flickr account which I update on a daily basis and it has opened up a whole new world.
Having a good camera phone makes things easier for me to shoot on a daily basis. One never leaves the house without a phone, but sometimes I forget my camera. It makes things easier and convenient for me. I would like my camera phone to have an auto-focus, zoom, and some minor manual functions. I took a few black and whites with the Samsung Pixon during the event because the lighting was quite dramatic. I also used the zoom-in function when shooting the performers on stage. I had fun with the Samsung Pixon phone.
Mike Huang: Photography got my interest because I liked capturing moments on film. I want to have something to look back on. It helps me a lot to have excellent features in my mobile phone; it makes everything more convenient and gives me flexibility to shoot anytime I want. I want my camera phone to have powerful functions such as a flash, zoom, panoramic shot, black and white, sepia, red-eye removal, auto-focus function. Taking shots of people is my favorite subject. I used the black and white, smile shot, flash and auto-focus of the Pixon phone during its launch to add a little more effect to the pictures. Having the chance to play and shoot with the Samsung Pixon phone gave me an awesome experience.
Bryan Lim: I first got interested in photography when I was able to try an SLR camera from a friend. I noticed how fast it could shoot and capture the moment. I got hooked on it when I saw how cameras have evolved from film to digital to handheld and now to phones. It’s really very convenient that mobile phones now have cameras; you don’t need to bring a camera with you all the time. The camera functions that I want in my mobile phone are zoom, black and white, and macro functions. Those were the functions that I used when I took some shots during the Samsung Pixon event. I like that I was able to play with my photos using those functions. When I’m taking pictures I’m always fascinated by landscapes—small details that are not noticed anymore. It was fun using the Samsung Pixon phone.
