MANILA, Philippines - The digital age has put more pressure on traditional media than ever before and it’s no stronger felt than by the newspaper industry. The former mainstay of daily media has been on the ropes for the last several years but the broadsheet is still fighting, thanks to the efforts of those who still see and believe in the power of print. Still, the question remains: how can newspapers compete for relevancy in the age of social media? This is at the core of Young STAR’s first-ever panel in this year’s Philippine Literary Festival. Happening today, Aug. 29, we’ve gathered the school papers of some of the country’s elite academies to discuss how the youth in particular are making the seemingly old newspaper new again. Aptly named “Paper Towns,” the panel will feature the current brains behind the University of Santo Tomas’ The Varsitarian, De La Salle University’s The La Sallian, San Beda College’s The Bedan, and College of Saint Benilde’s The Benildean. The panel starts at 3:30 p.m., at the Raffles Hotel in Makati and is co-presented by National Book Store.
