Maine Manalansan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Ever heard of the saying “birds of the same feather flock together?” Well, that’s not always true. Sure, you and your friend have a few things in common but you aren’t exactly the same. There might be times when you don’t like spending a precious weekend but your friends do. You all have your differences but when you come together, it just disappears. You become the cool group everyone wants to be part of (at least, you think so).

The same goes for television shows and movies. It’s hard to finish movies like Bring It On or High School Musical without wanting to sit in at least one of the clique tables in school. This week, we put on the onlookers’ shoes and list down seven onscreen friendships we’d kill to be part of.

Seth, Evan and Fogell from Superbad

When your bestie (who you’ve spent literally every single day of your life with since you were kids) is moving away for college, you have to make your senior year count. The trio doesn’t exactly have a spot at the cool table but they try. They really do. Sure, they made some questionable choices in life like creating fake IDs and running away from the cops. But if there’s anything to learn from thse broskies, it’s that distance doesn’t matter among true friends; they’ve still got each other’s backs no matter what.

Andie and Duckie from Pretty in Pink

It’s hard to bounce back from the friendzone once you have been rejected. But you’ve got to move on and accept that not everyone can have Lizzie McGuire and Gordo’s happy ending (a classic best-friends-turned-lovers tale from the early ‘00s). This is why we love Duckie and his attitude. Let go and just be happy for your friend, even if that means seeing her spend prom with that same jerk who broke her heart (who happens to be not as bad as you thought). If that’s not real friendship, then we don’t know what is.

Groot and Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy

There is no greater test in a friendship than hopping from planet to planet trying to make a living. Groot and Rocket seem to have mastered each other’s skills and thoughts so completely that Rocket can interpret “I Am Groot” in more ways than any of us ever could. Rocket has the wits and Groot has the muscle. It’s this kind of connection we’d love to have with our friends, one where we don’t need language to understand what each other means to say.

Rae and Archie from My Mad Fat Diary

Here’s an awkward way to start a friendship: Rae had a crush on Archie before she found out he was gay. Rae lost a potential boyfriend but she definitely gained a G.B.F. (gay best friend). Archie boosted Rae’s confidence, helped her bag the cutie she had her eye on and confronted other bitchy friends within their barkada. Their sweet relationship totally makes up for their strange first encounter. Rae and Archie prove that in this life, who needs a B.F. when you have a G.B.F.?

Milo and Maggie Dean from The Skeleton Twins

They say that your siblings are your first friends. Twins Milo and Maggie definitely had each other’s backs as kids but things changed when Milo moved away. They rekindled their relationship after Milo’s failed suicide attempt and things were pretty much the same. From lip-syncing to Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now to saving each other from the heavy emotional stuff, Milo and Maggie show us that sometimes, our best pals are also in our family.

The gang from Friends

Almost everyone in your barkada may have asked this question: If I were a Friends character, who would I be? You can’t really blame them because anybody wants to be part of the Friends gang. They have their own couch in a coffee shop, they have their own song (which is now stuck in your head) and they’re pretty much each other’s family. Their friendship is so strong that no awkward breakup or wedding day drama can tear them apart, as a great posse should be.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in everything that they do

The comedic duo is accomplished, empowered and not afraid to make fun of themselves. If you’re a newbie to the Fey-Poehler friendship, you might even mistake them as lovers, which is totally cool because they can be. Really. After all, they shared a lot of experiences and a few firsts with each other (e.g. Tina taught Amy how to groom her eyebrows). They’ve been friends for years but are still super excited to see each other. And if we can be able to talk about our BFFs in the sweet way Tina and Amy do about each other, we’d be set for life.

Bonus: Hachiko and Parker from Hachi: A Dog’s Tale

Who didn’t cry while watching this movie? This type of loyalty doesn’t come easy for a person but we can always rely on our furry friends for comfort and company.
